*DAY 4: YOU CAN’T CHANGE WHAT YOU DON’T TRACK*
*Awareness is the beginning of control.*
Many people sincerely want to improve their lives. They pray, plan, attend seminars, read motivational posts—and yet nothing really changes. Not because they lack desire, but because they lack visibility.
You cannot manage what you do not monitor.
You cannot improve what you refuse to measure.
In Nigeria, where money is tight, time is pressured, and life moves fast, tracking feels unnecessary or even stressful. But the truth is simple: what you don’t track will quietly control you.
Why Tracking Feels Uncomfortable
*Tracking forces honesty—and honesty is uncomfortable.*
*It exposes:*
• How much money truly leaves your pocket
• How much time disappears daily
• How often you postpone important tasks
• How inconsistent your routines are
Many people avoid tracking not because it is hard, but because they are afraid of what they will see.
But ignorance does not protect you—it limits you.
The Nigerian Money Blind Spot
Ask the average person how much they spent last month on:
• Transport
• Data
• Food outside the house
• Small daily expenses
Most people don’t know.
Yet these “small” expenses silently drain finances. By the end of the year, it’s not the big costs that ruin people—it’s the unnoticed leaks.
*A common Nigerian phrase is:*
“Money just finishes.”
Money does not “just” finish.
It leaves through doors you never checked.
Time Is the Bigger Problem
Money can be earned again. Time cannot.
Many people say:
“I don’t have time.”
*But when tracked, time is often spent on:*
• Endless scrolling
• Long unproductive conversations
• Television without intention
• Waiting without planning
*Tracking time reveals the truth: we don’t lack time—we lack structure.*
*The Subtle Faith Principle*
There is a principle that runs through wisdom literature: accountability produces growth.
From farming to business, from stewardship to leadership—nothing grows well without measurement.
*Even spiritual growth is measured by fruit, not feelings.*
Order is not rigidity.
Order is respect for resources.
Why Successful People Track Almost Everything
*People who make progress—whether in business, academics, health, or faith—tend to track:*
• Their habits
• Their expenses
• Their time
• Their performance
Not because they are obsessive, but because clarity empowers decision-making.
You can’t adjust what you don’t understand.
*A Real-Life Example*
Two people earn the same income.
*Person A*
Doesn’t track spending
Feels broke constantly
Borrows often
Blames the economy
*Person B*
*Tracks expenses weekly*
Identifies waste
Adjusts gradually
Builds savings slowly
Same economy.
Different awareness.
*Tracking does not make you rich overnight—but it prevents you from staying confused.*
What You Should Track (Start Small)
*You don’t need complex apps or spreadsheets. A notebook works.*
1. *Track Your Money*
• Income received
• Daily expenses
• Savings (if any)
This alone can change your financial life.
*2. Track Your Time*
For one week, write:
• When you wake up
• What you do each hour
• When you sleep
*This reveals where your life truly goes.*
3. Track Your Habits
• Sleep time
• Study/work time
• Exercise
• Screen time
*Patterns don’t lie.*
Tracking Is Not About Guilt
This is important.
Tracking is not to shame yourself.
It is to educate yourself.
Numbers are neutral. They don’t judge—they inform.
Once you see the pattern, you gain power to change it.
Why People Stop Tracking Too Early
Many start tracking but stop because:
• They don’t like what they see
• They expect instant results
• They feel overwhelmed
But awareness always precedes adjustment.
No one fixes a problem the same day it is discovered—but discovery is the turning point.
*A Simple Exercise for Today*
For the next 7 days, do the following:
1. Write down every expense, no matter how small
2. Record how you spend your first 5 waking hours
3. Note one habit you repeated today
That’s all.
Don’t change anything yet. Just observe.
Clarity comes before correction.
The Hidden Benefit of Tracking
When you track:
• Waste reduces naturally
• Discipline improves subconsciously
• Focus increases
• Confidence grows
Why? Because awareness changes behaviour.
Light exposes leaks.
*A Closing Reflection*
*Ask yourself tonight* :
*“If I tracked my life honestly for one year, what version of me would emerge?”*
*That question is uncomfortable—but transformational.*
Tomorrow, we confront something deeper: why some problems repeat year after year despite effort—and how to finally break that cycle.
