Please Save Us From IKEDC

The Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria, SCIAN, an NGO, was established in 1984 by spinal cord injured persons to support survivors of spinal cord injury. We are a self-help organisation surviving on donations from members of the public and from religious organisations to run our national Secretariat and branch offices nationwide.

We have a problem with Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, IKEDC over crazy bills and our attempts to address the problem through established channels has yielded no positive results.

At our Amuwo-Odofin national Secretariat in Lagos where we plan to establish a Rehabilitation Hospital, and where we presently have a number of our members in transit accommodation, we use a dedicated electricity transformer and we are classified under Tariff Code: B-MD2 /Tariff (NGN/kWh): 69.75

The total electricity bill sent to us by IKEDC from January 2025 to December 2025 was ₦2,357,860.21, while we paid ₦2,375,000.00– slightly above the actual bill, to offset part of a legacy debt. Our average monthly bill in 2025 was ₦196,488.35. The highest bill we got in 2025 was N268,807.78 for May while the lowest was N144,863.78 for August. Between January 2026 and May 2026, the total bill was ₦805,973.46 and we paid ₦847,000.00

However, in June 2026, IKEDC sent us a bill of ₦901,574.55. This is more than the entire bill for the first five months of 2026. There was no reason for this as the government has not announced an increase in electricity tariffs. In protest, we wrote IKEDC and the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, LASERC. Our letters were duely received and
acknowledged, please see below.

In an email response to our letter, LASERC said it would only intervene if our issue was not satisfactorily resolved by IKEDC after 15 days. We have already informed the LASERC that IKEDC’s response was to increase our bill, yet LASERC hasn’t said anything.

On its part, the IKEDC three weeks after receiving our letter of complaint and without any engagement whatsoever, sent another bill of ₦1,314,271.35 for the month of July. If the June bill of ₦901,574.55 was crazy, the July bill was crazier.

One week after, precisely 21st August, IKEDC disconnected our supply.

We are not begging for money to pay the outrageous bills because paying will only embolden the IKEDC to continue to charge us and other consumers arbitrarily.

We want the public to help us prevail on IKEDC to stop exploiting us. Why should IKEDC be acting with impunity? Why has it not thought it fit to address our complaint after more than one month? Why does it believe that we have no choice but to pay whatever it asks for?

The local IKEDC officials have not even shown any empathy. They have rather threatened to deal with us for writing an official complaint.

Oftentimes, persons with disabilities are erroneously accused of being troublesome. We do not want to give the opportunity to anyone to level this accusation against SCIAN. Hopefully we won’t be forced to resort to that.
