On International Women’s Day 2024, I embarked on a solo motorcycle journey across Africa. To date, I’ve covered over 25,000 km on the same 250cc motorcycle. My journey has been continuous, self-funded, and solo—aligning with the established criteria for the longest solo motorcycle journey.

Before applying, I conducted extensive research. I discovered that individuals like Benka Pulko from Slovenia hold the Guinness World Record for the longest solo motorcycle journey by a woman, having traveled 180,016 km through 69 countries and seven continents, starting and ending in Ptuj, Slovenia, over 2,000 days. There’s also Danell Lynn who holds the record for the longest motorcycle journey in a single country (USA)

These records emphasize starting and ending in the same location, making the journey single and continuous.

Despite meeting these criteria, my application was rejected. I was informed that the title doesn’t exist, yet in the same correspondence, I was offered a business consultation service for £10,000.
This raises questions: Does paying this fee suddenly validate the title? Does the money make my journey worthy of acknowledgment?

Adding to this, my planned ride from South Africa back to Kenya would have extended the journey to over 35,000 km, further solidifying its place as the longest solo motorcycle journey in Africa by a woman.

I’ve undertaken this journey entirely alone. I often joke with friends that if anything were end my life, it would be the lack of sleep. My days are spent traveling, evenings are spent editing, and nights working to fund my journey. This has been the most personal endeavor of my life.

It’s disheartening to see that despite meeting all the criteria, recognition seems tied to one’s ability to pay. My journey was about resilience, determination, and breaking barriers—not about financial transactions.

Guinness World Records has the motto: “Celebrate the world’s best, to inspire ordinary people and to entertain and inform.” Had I known recognition was contingent upon financial capability, I would’ve allocated my $1,000 to more impactful endeavors.
