MY CAMP EXPERIENCE
I entered the orientation camp with a beautiful smile on my face, fully prepared for the task ahead of me,I have heard people talked about how they are stressed and how poor the food is and I entered fully prepared believing so much that I will cope and enjoyed my stay for the twenty-one days on the orientation camp.
I was warmly received at the entrance of the camp with snacks and water,I saw some corp members already in their white fowl dress, marching as the soldiers give command.I was perplexed, how come this people already assembly? Well!! I will March too…lol
After the entrance registration,I went straight to the hostel in order to get a bed and pick a more comfortable bunk because I already know I can’t start registration that day and I have to take a rest, after awhile I found a bed space and start battling with my mosquito net……lol, after wasting so much time on fixing the net, I arranged my bed but I couldn’t sleep yet because a lot of corp members also troop in,some looking for bed, some arranging their stuffs, some dropped their bags and went for registration while some was also battling with their mosquito net.Few hours later there’s light out and everyone was force to sleep.
Couldn’t sleep on time that night because that was the first time I will sleeping on a bunk bed with large number of people from different tribe and culture.
The following morning,I heard people moving up and down in the hostel, checked the time it was 3:00am, I was wowed,so no more sleep than to carry my bucket and go get bathing water, and 5:00am on dot I heard a trumpet sound calling us all out to the parade ground for morning meditation,I joined the others as we heard a voice saying “double up” they start running and I also joined…it was a very cold morning and after the meditation, we were informed on what our program for the day was.
I started my registration and after awhile I get all my Nysc kit but I did not join the parade that day,I watched as others march up at the parade ground and now I have my meal tickets(which I hardly use). The morning drilling is always fun even the officials partake in it,whenever there is noise we will be instructed to sit on the ground and I eventually get used to it.
I get used to waking up by 3:00am,bathing in the cold, standing on the parade ground for 2/3hours in the morning, sitting in the auditorium for 5hrs long lectures, queuing for the camp Jollof rice with bread and egg, visiting maami market everyday for my special delicacies, giving some of my clothes to dry cleaner for better sun drying, noise in the hostels and listening to several language in the night, the cry of missing items everyday in the hostel, the strict instructions and attending social night even if I’m not interested and lastly coming back to the hostel worn out and sleeping off immediately……
I learnt a lot of things from the orientation camp, went for cosmetology in my S.A.E.D class and I never regretted this decision ,enough sensitization and enlightening programmes, various professional training that can enhance one’s value, attending those lectures was not a waste after all, it has helped in equipping me more.
And lastly,I made a lot of friends, from the East,West,North and Southern part of the country.I get to know some people and how diverse we are in cultural belief. And to appreciate the fact that we are one and with oneness we can move this Nation forward.
