It was a cold Sunday morning in Ibadan when I received the most shocking news of my life.
Earlier in my pregnancy, I had registered for antenatal care at a local health centre in Ibadan. The centre wasn’t perfect, but they tried — at least they offered some necessary drugs at a small cost. As everyone knows, Ibadan is deeply rooted in Yoruba culture. By God’s grace, I am married to a Yoruba man.
One day during our antenatal session, I met a woman who sat next to me. The midwives, as usual, spoke mostly in Yoruba. I leaned toward her and whispered, “Please, can you interpret that?” She smiled and replied, “I’m Igbo.”
I lit up with excitement.
“Wow! Me too! I’m from Imo State,” I told her.
She smiled and said she was from Enugu.
When I mentioned I was married to a Yoruba man, she playfully asked, “Yoruba? That’s where love carried you?”
I laughed. “Yes — what matters is peace, not tribe.”
She nodded, agreeing. “That’s true.”
Before we left, we exchanged contacts. Sometimes, I wish I had never met her — maybe I would be at peace. But deep inside, I believe our paths crossed for a reason — part of God’s plan.
She was so kind. Every time she saw me, she would compliment me.
“You don’t even look like a six-month pregnant woman! You’re glowing!”
Then she’d tease herself, saying, “Look at me, I’ve darkened!”
I would laugh and reassure her, “It’s just the hormones. Once you put to bed, everything will be fine.”
Weeks passed. I eventually changed hospitals. I had heard stories of women being referred to other clinics during labor if complications arose — and I didn’t want to take any risks. But deep down, I began to wonder… Was I already expecting something bad to happen?

The Appeal Court Lagos Division has dismissed the appeal filed by a Denmark national, Peter Nielsen, who was sentenced to d£ath for k!lling his Nigerian wife, Zainab and daughter, Petra Nielsen.

Nielsen was on May 20, 2022, found guilty, convicted and sentenced to d£ath by hanging for the murd€r of Zainab and Petra, by Justice Bolanle Okikiolu-Ighile,(retd.), of the Lagos State High Court, at the Tafawa Balewa Square. The Lagos State Government had accused Nielsen, now 57, of smothering Zainab and their daughter Petra Nielsen, to death at about 3:45 am, on April 5, 2018, at their No. 4, Flat 17, Bella Vista Tower, Banana Island, Ikoyi residence. Two counts of m¥rder was filed against him.

Dissatisfied with his conviction and sentencing, Nielsen approached the appellate court for the judgment to be upturned.

However in a ruling delivered on Friday, July 19, the Appeal court upheld his conviction by the trial court and dismissed his appeal for lack of merit. The appeal court held that the respondent (Lagos State) proved the offence of m¥rder against the appellant beyond reasonable doubt.

“The corroborative evidence of DNA also strengthened the circumstantial evidence against the appellant. There was no proof of breaking into the apartment as suggested by the appellant. The missing exhibits as a result of the attack on the court do not affect the defence of the appellant as he had ample opportunity before the attack on the court. The findings of the forensic examiner corroborate the evidence of the children.”

Nielsen was found guilty and convicted of the m¥rder of Zainab and Petra, by Justice Bolanle Okikiolu-Ighile,(retd.), of the Lagos State High Court, at the Tafawa Balewa Square on May 20, 2022. The trial court held that Nielsen smothered Zainab and Petra Nielsen to d£ath.

Women Group Demands Apology From Akpabio Over ‘Sexist Remarks’ Against Kogi Senator Natasha H Akpoti

FLEADERS Nigeria, a female leadership project of Emerge Women Development Initiative, has demanded an unreserved apology from Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, over what it called his sexist comments towards the lawmaker representing Kogi Central in the Senate, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Senator Akpabio had come under fire for rebuking Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan – a female lawmaker – and telling her that the Senate chamber was not a nightclub, therefore, she must be recognised before speaking during plenary.
Responding to the development, FLEADERS Nigeria described the remark as not only condescending and disrespectful but also perpetuating harmful gender stereotypes.
The organisation lamented that the female legislator was subjected to unjustified bullying and total disregard, stressing that this ‘affects all Nigerian women’.

In a statement by the Chairwoman, FLEADERS Nigeria, Bridget Obi, and Executive Director, Nana Kazaure, they demanded an unreserved apology from the Senate President, describing the remark as reckless, derogatory and unacceptable.
“As a leader, Akpabio’s words have a profound impact on Nigerian women and girls. FLEADERS will not tolerate attempts to silence or diminish women’s voices in leadership and governance. We demand an immediate and unreserved apology from the Senate President, not only to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan but also to the women and girls of Nigeria whom he has offended.

Women group knock Akpabio over outburst against Akpoti-Uduaghan, demands apology.

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja
A coalition of over 300 women’s rights groups, WOMANIFESTO, has condemned the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, for his derogatory remarks against Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan during plenary on Thursday 18th July, 2024
The group while demanding for an immediate apology, said Akpabio’s comment, “we are not in a nightclub,” was perceived as an attempt to belittle female senators, suggesting that women should only speak in informal settings.
“This incident reflects a deeply rooted misogynistic attitude that has no place in our society,” stated a Womanifesto representative. The coalition demands an immediate apology from Akpabio, emphasizing that such language undermines women’s contributions in governance. They argue that as a prominent leader, Akpabio should exemplify respect for all, regardless of gender.
The group insisted that Akpabio’s statement reflects a deeply rooted misogynistic attitude “that has no place in our society or our governmental.
