The River's Secret

Episode 5: The Cave of Eternal Light

Ada ran deeper into the forest, clutching the glowing pendant against her chest.
Behind her, the wolves grew closer.
She could hear their paws pounding against the ground.

"Help!" she screamed.
Suddenly, the pendant became intensely bright.
A blue light burst from it, revealing a hidden path between two enormous trees.
Ada stopped.

She had never seen the path before.
She followed it.
Minutes later, she reached a massive stone entrance covered with strange ancient symbols.

The Cave of Eternal Light.
Ada stepped inside.
The moment she entered, the entrance sealed behind her.

She turned around in panic.
"How am I supposed to get out?"
Then she heard a woman's voice.
"You came for the Healing Waters."
Ada spun around.

An old woman in a beautiful blue robe stood in the darkness.
"Who are you?"
"I am the Keeper of the Cave."
Ada held up the crystal bottle.

"I need the water to save someone."
The Keeper studied her carefully.
"Everyone who enters this cave says they want to save someone."

"But very few are willing to sacrifice something precious."
Ada's eyes filled with tears.
"Tell me what I must sacrifice."
The woman pointed toward a glowing pool deep inside the cave.

"Your greatest fear."
Ada stared at the water.
"What happens if I fail?"
"You will never leave this cave."
Ada swallowed hard.

Then she stepped toward the pool.
Suddenly, the water changed.
Ada saw herself as a little girl, standing alone beside an empty house.

She saw every painful memory she had tried to forget.
Her parents leaving.
Her hunger.
People laughing at her poverty.
Every moment she had felt unwanted.
Ada began crying.

"I can't..."
The Keeper's voice echoed through the cave.
"If you run from your pain, you will lose the person you came here to save."
Ada wiped her tears.

"No."
She stepped into the glowing water.
"I've been afraid my whole life."
"But I'm not running anymore."
The entire cave shook.
The pendant on her chest exploded with blue light.

The Healing Waters began rising into the crystal bottle by themselves.
The Keeper smiled.
"You have passed."

But suddenly...
A loud crash came from the sealed entrance.
BOOM!
Someone had entered the cave.
Ada turned toward the sound.
A familiar voice echoed through the darkness.
"Ada!"
Her eyes widened.
It was the voice of someone she never expected to see again.
