DARK SPOT 05/04/2023

WHAT CAUSES DARK SPOT ON MY FACE AND BODY?

What causes dark spots on my face and body?

How long will they take to fade away?

Is it possible to get rid of dark spots sooner?

And what are the best treatments for dark spots and marks on the skin?

These questions are way more common than we think. Estimates are around 80% of people will be diagnosed with a pigmentation disorder in their lifetime. That’s 8 out of every 10 people. And those persistent dark spots and splotches can have a very negative effect on your Confidence. Not to mention the damage that goes along with it that causes premature aging.

For over a decade, Health and Beauty Mart has studied dark spots, highlighting how it’s formed in your skin. This is how we’ve created some of the most innovative hyperpigmentation treatement available. And it’s how HBM continuously helps you with Confidence.

WHAT CAUSES DARK SPOTS ON THE SKIN

Dark spots and dark marks on face and body skin are a sign of an overabundance of the skin pigment molecule called melanin. Cells called melanocytes in our skin produce melanin as a form of natural sun protection. And the amount and type of melanin is what gives us our skin colour and tone.

When dark spots form, it’s a sign that the melanocytes in that area of the skin are overproducing melanin. We call this condition hyperpigmentation, and it affects all skin types, from the fairest to the darkest of skins, from oily, dry to sensitive skin

TRIGGERS AND TYPES OF HYPERPIGMENTATION

There are three types of hyperpigmentation, based on what triggers them. The root cause sometimes needs slightly specialized treatment. (Although it’s important to note that sun exposure dramatically worsens all of them):

a) Sun-induced hyperpigmentation is the most common cause of dark spots. It happens when sun exposure signals parts of your skin to produce melanin to try and block out the UV light to prevent damage. This makes your body overproduce melanin, causing dark spots or patches of skin.

b) Hormonal hyperpigmentation is caused by fluctuations in hormone levels (common after pregnancy and giving birth). They also trigger melanocytes to produce more melanin. Note: Sun exposure worsens it, and it’s not just related to pregnancy, even taking contraceptives can trigger it.

c) Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the result of an inflamed skin injury. It’s very common after inflamed acne lesions and it affects all skin types.

DO DARK SPOTS EVER FADE?

On their own, dark spots do fade, but it takes a long time. It can take a single dark spot anywhere between 3 and 24 months (2 years) to fade naturally. And, if you have several dark spots on your face or body, there’s no guarantee that they all started at the same time. So they might not all go away at the same time either.

Also, if you’re not treating the cause of hyperpigmentation, there’s a good chance you’ll develop even more dark spots by the time it takes for a single one to fade naturally. That’s why we look at ways of treating dark marks instead.

HOW TO REMOVE DARK SPOTS SOONER

Health and Beauty Mart has studied the skin and, in particular, how the skin forms the pigment molecules called melanin. We know dark spots form when cells called melanocytes in one area of your skin produce too much (or too little) melanin compared to other areas of skin. And we’ve identified certain steps or pathways in how it is formed. This allowed us to develop one of the most groundbreaking treatment ranges for dark marks. Learn more

Products that impact the steps of melanin formation every step of the way, using Health and Beauty Mart proprietary Arbutin. We’re now able to normalize the skin’s pigment production, safely and effectively in all skin types. And we can also fast-track the removal of dark spots by increasing skin cell turnover (exfoliation).

THE BEST PRODUCT FOR IMPROVING DARK SPOTS: ARBUTIN

HBM has a revolutionary range of topical skincare products that inhibit melanin formation across all the steps of its formation inside your skin. What’s more, it’s perfectly safe and suitable for any skin type, clinically proven, so easy to use you can apply it at home and it’s proudly made for all types of skin

Arbutin has the power to influence the causes of hyperpigmentation and it’s one of the very few products that safely treat hyperpigmentation in all skin types.

For the last decade, arbutin was the most advanced product for dark spots available, because it acts on the process of how they form in the skin. HBM has updated the dark spot corrector range with an even more effective pigment-blocking arbutin complex and, for the first time in the skincare industry, included an ingredient that treats melasma (hormonal pigmentation) at the DNA level. It truly is the most technologically advanced hyperpigmentation serum.

The results? Healthy, glowing, and radiant even-toned skin that’s free of dark marks, black heads, acnes and blemishes. And added protection against the aging effects of damaging sunlight.

Hope your learnt something?

You do not have to stick to this diet chart. You can consume healthy foods that will help repair and rejuvenate your skin. And for that, you have to understand what to include in your diet and what to avoid. Given below are a few tips that will help you do so:

Drinking water on an empty stomach is a must. You may consume aloe vera juice, turmeric powder, or lime juice.

Always have breakfast before heading out.

Include good amounts of fruits, veggies, and protein in every meal.

Stick to healthy snacking by consuming freshly pressed fruit juice, yogurt, buttermilk, or coconut water.

Consume foods that are good for your gut and liver.

Avoid foods that you may be allergic to, such as dairy, seafood, and gluten.

Get creative by seasoning your food with spices and herbs.

Keep hydrating yourself by including water, buttermilk, coconut water, and fruit and vegetable juices into your daily diet. Water is a natural detoxifier, so try to drink a minimum of 2.5 liters of water a day (amount may vary based on body weight).

Quick Tip:

Sip detox water with lemon, cucumber, and ginger. It effectively eliminates toxins and helps improve your skin glow.

Now, let us take a look at the list of foods you must consume and how they help improve your skin health.

15 Foods For Naturally Glowing Skin

1. Water

Drinking lots of water throughout the day will keep your system internally hydrated, which, in turn, directly reflects on your skin. Water not only flushes out the harmful toxins from your system but also keeps wrinkles at bay and gives you naturally glowing skin. Keep a bottle of water handy and sip on it whenever you crave for your favorite cola.

2. Dark Green Leafy Vegetables

When it comes to skin health, dark leafy greens take the front seat. They are loaded with antioxidants and essential vitamins and nutrients. Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, Swiss chard, radish leaves, mustard leaves, lettuce, coriander, parsley, broccoli, and arugula help rid your skin of dullness and enhance its glow. You can add them to salads, soups, sandwiches, wraps, daal, etc

3. Turmeric

Turmeric for naturally glowing skin

Curcumin is the main phytonutrient responsible for turmeric’s antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties. Turmeric taken orally or used for topical application has overall skin benefits, though further research is required to prove the same. You can consume washed and peeled raw turmeric first thing in the morning or while going to bed with a glass of milk. You can also add fresh turmeric to curries, salad dressing, juices, etc.

4. Avocado

Avocado is the perfect superfood for the skin. It is rich in vitamin E and healthy fats. A cross-sectional study done on Japanese women has revealed that healthy fats – especially saturated and monounsaturated fatsi – improve skin elasticity. This means that avocados may help slow down skin damage, lock in moisture, and prevent premature wrinkling and dullness. Easy ways to include them in your diet is to add them to your breakfast bowl, sandwiches, salads, dipping sauce, etc.

5. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is the most popular home remedy for all skin problems. It contains the hormones auxin and gibberellin that have anti-inflammatory properties. Hence, when you apply aloe vera topically or consume its extract in the form of juice or supplements, it helps reduce any kind of inflammation. A study done on rats has found that it can also boost collagen synthesis and heal dermal wounds. However, don’t ever consume aloe vera gel directly from a plant.

Quick Tip:

You can use a homemade scrub made with olive oil, aloe vera, honey, and oatmeal and use it twice a week to enhance the glow of your skin.

6. Fruits

Fruits are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fruit sugar. These sweet treats keep your hunger pangs at bay, preventing you from consuming sugary junk food that increases inflammation in your body. Hence, by consuming fruits, you will be able to maintain your skin’s health and get the glow that you always wanted. Here are a few fruits that we recommend:

Mangoes are rich in antioxidants and beta-carotene (a precursor of vitamin A), which is synthesized in the skin. Oral intake of beta-carotene helps reduce UV-induced redness in humans. It also said to prevent premature aging, retain the skin’s elasticity, and facilitate the growth of new skin cells, though there is not enough scientific evidence to support these claims.

Banana is rich in vitamins A, B, and E and prevents premature wrinkling of the skin. It has moisturizing and antioxidant properties.

Papaya has antibacterial properties. Thus, it may help in shedding the dead skin cells and clearing your skin of impurities.

Oranges and kiwis are rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C delays the onset of wrinkles and boosts collagen synthesis Kiwi is also a powerful antioxidant. Other vitamin C-rich fruits are guavas, grapefruits, and strawberries. Vitamin C also protects the skin from sun damage and promotes cell turnover, thus preserving the youth and beauty of your skin.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that a glass of warm water with honey and lemon juice can lighten your skin tone and keep it clear.

Apple helps maintain a toned look and makes your skin look younger, though there is no scientific evidence to prove the same.

Berries have potent antioxidant properties. Anecdotal evidence suggests that consuming them may help you get rid of dark spots and marks quickly.

7. Carrot

Carrots contain high levels of beta-carotene, vitamin A, and antioxidants. They make your skin healthy from the inside by flushing out toxins. They also have a photoprotective effect. They protect your skin from sun-induced damage and prevent premature aging and wrinkles. Sweet potatoes and yams are other options that show similar results.

8. Fish And Fish Oil

Fish and fish oil are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. They provide the skin with a healthy dose of natural oils (good fats) to reduce inflammation, acne, and redness. Consume fatty fish like tuna, salmon, and carp or take fish oil supplements to keep your skin healthy and soft. Consume grilled or baked fish. Do not discard the skin.

9. Healthy Fats

Healthy fats are great for your skin. The main sources of healthy fats (omega-6 fatty acids) are nuts (almond, walnut, macadamia, etc.), seeds (flaxseed, sunflower seed, chia seed, etc.), healthy oils (olive oil, rice bran oil, etc.), and fish and fish oil, which we have already talked about. Nuts, seeds, and oils are great options for vegans and vegetarians to nourish their skin, improve its structure, and heal wounds. Include them in your diet in adequate amounts to get flawless skin.

10. Green Tea/Matcha Tea

Aanand Geria, a board-certified dermatologist and a Clinical Instructor in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Health System, says, “Green tea contains vitamin E, which promotes new skin cell growth, making the skin softer and giving it a natural glow. It also contains vitamin B2, which helps keep skin firm and youthful. Green tea can be consumed or applied to your skin; both are equally beneficial for glowing skin.” Green tea is a natural source of antioxidants. It is loaded with a potent phytonutrient – epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The percent of EGCGi is highest in matcha tea and green tea. These antioxidants in tea help scavenge the harmful free radicals, thereby protecting your skin from premature aging, dark spots, and redness. Green tea polyphenolsi also prevent acne vulgarisi and lipid synthesis by the sebaceous glandsi , leaving your skin healthy and blemish-free.

This, in turn, can cause hormonal imbalance, weak immunity, gut problems, etc. So, you need a good dose of antioxidants from food, specifically broccoli, as it gives you quicker results compared to other cruciferous veggies.

12. Yogurt

Yogurt and buttermilk contain probiotics that help in digestion, absorption, and excretion. When your digestion is smooth, and you have no gut problems, your skin will be less prone to breakouts, dryness, and infections. Consume yogurt every day after lunch, dinner, and in shakes and smoothies.

Consume bottle gourd juice in the morning with other breakfast items. You can also make bottle gourd soup or add it to stews and daals.

14. Bitter Melon

It tastes bitter but is an amazing natural remedy for skin problems like redness, allergies, scars, and tanning. A study conducted on liver-injured rats has found that, apart from being a good source of antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties, bitter melon also keeps your liver and gut-healthy. Consume boiled bitter melon or add it to stews. Do not fry or soak it in water for a long duration as it reduces its nutritional value.

15. Red Wine

Red wine is nothing but fermented red grape juice. It has the ability to retain the skin’s original glow and prevent aging. The polyphenols present in it protect the skin from inflammation and sun damage. However, consume it in limited quantities as excess alcohol causes dehydration, which might aggravate your skin problems.

Acne myths busted with HBM Research Laboratories

Despite being one of the most common inflammatory skin conditions in the world, acne is still very misunderstood. So much so, that myths still abound. Fortunately, at HBM Research Laboratories, we’re acne experts that can help you sort the facts from the fiction.

Myth 1: Only teenagers get acne

Nope, not true! It would be great if acne was a problem you could simply outgrow, but this isn’t the case for everyone. Four main triggers that contribute to acne – skin that doesn’t naturally exfoliate the way it should, leading to a build-up of dead skin cells that can clog the pores; an excess of oil that also gets trapped in pores; infection and inflammation. These triggers can affect both adults and teens, but it’s true, teens are often most affected. This is due to their body’s creating more androgens during puberty, a hormone that can increase the production of oil.

You should also know that, regardless of your age, the active ingredients proven to help clear up acne remain the same. This is why Arbutin, our incredibly effective acne treatment range, is suitable for acne sufferers of any age.

Myth 2: Chocolate causes pimples

Chocoholics, you can breathe a sigh of relief! The idea that your favourite chocolate bar could be the baddie behind your breakout has persisted for decades, so much so that multiple studies have been performed to find out. The conclusion is now an extremely mixed bag with some saying that yes, eating chocolate could worsen acne and others saying it had no effect. What we do know, however, is that some research has found a correlation between low zinc levels and acne. To be clear, this doesn’t mean that acne is a sign of a zinc deficiency, but it does mean that, if you have acne, you’re more likely to not be getting enough zinc.

Interestingly, the zinc-acne connection makes sense because zinc helps regulate our immune cell response in a way that helps control inflammation, one of the big triggers for a breakout. For this reason, we’ve Arbutin, a combination proven to help reduce the redness and sensitivity associated with inflammatory acne.

Myth 3: You can scrub your way to clear skin

Yes, a pimple is the result of a blocked pore, but the idea that you can “empty” these with a scrub is misguided. In fact, harsh, grainy scrubs are one of the worst things you can do to treat a breakout. More often than not, the particle is too big to get inside the pore and, worse yet, the friction will irritate your already inflamed skin, causing it to get even angrier. So, while acne sufferers will definitely want to up your exfoliation, they need to choose their weapons wisely. In this case, gentle chemical exfoliators will do a much better job of gently ridding your skin of the excess skin cells that can clog up your pores. This is why our Clarity collection doesn’t contain a scrub. Instead, it contains a mix of alpha hydroxy acids, non-irritating forms of retinol and salicylic acid to gently increase your skin’s cellular turnover.

Myth 4: Getting a tan will help clear up my skin

Yes, getting a tan may help temporarily minimize the look of redness associated with acne and, at first, it might feel like it’s helping to dry it up. Alas, all you’re doing is dehydrating and burning your skin causing it to produce even more oil and become inflamed. And guess what that leads to? Yep, a worsening of acne. If you want a golden glow, you might be better off using a self-tanning product. But something all acne sufferers definitely need in their artillery is a good sunscreen, especially since many of the active ingredients proven to help clear up acne, things like exfoliating acids and retinoids, will increase their skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Also, it’s not true that sunscreen will make acne worse – you just have to find one that’s lightweight and non-greasy.
