💔 “Baba Survived the Sickness… But Lost His Hearing”
Baba was in his late 70s.
Soft-spoken. Always said “Thank you, my daughter” after every injection.

He was admitted in a government hospital for an infection.
They started treatment.
Gentamicin injection.

Morning… injection.
Night… injection.

Days passed.
Baba was not getting better.
So the dose was increased.
“Let’s make it stronger,” they said.
After a few days, Baba started acting strange.

“Eh?”
“Say it again.”
“Talk louder.”

At first, everyone laughed.
“Na old age.”
“Baba don dey dull small.”
But it wasn’t funny.

One morning, Baba didn’t respond when his name was called.
They had to tap him.
🔔 His ears were ringing.
👂 Voices sounded far away.
😔 He looked scared.

That was when the truth hit us.
The injection helping his infection was slowly destroying his hearing.

😞 The Hard Part

The infection eventually improved.
Baba was discharged.
But his hearing?
It never returned.

At home, his grandchildren now shout to talk to him.
He nods, even when he doesn’t hear clearly.
Not because he understands —
but because he’s tired of asking people to repeat themselves.

⚠️ This Is Real Life

Gentamicin is a strong antibiotic.
When the dose is increased or used for too long — especially in the elderly — it can damage the ear permanently.
This is happening in our hospitals.

Not every silence is old age.
