IYA OLOMO AND THE SALT OF THE NATION
Characters:
IYA OLOMO - 68 years old. The most popular fruit seller in the market. Beautiful in and out. Wrapper tied with grace, face lined with wisdom, eyes always smiling. A traveler - she has sold fruits in Ghana, Togo, Kenya, Dubai and London. She can switch from Yoruba to English to French to broken Swahili in one breath.
OMOJOMI - Her first son, 24, just graduated from Mass Communication.
WURA & SIMI - Her two daughters, 19 and 17.
Setting: Evening, in front of Iya Olomo's house in Lagos. Her big fruit tray is covered for the day. The scent of oranges and pineapples still in the air.
SCENE STARTS
OMOJOMI: [pressing phone, shouting inside] Wura! Simi! Come outside now! Come and hear gist!
WURA: [comes out with Simi] What is it again? This your graduation never still end?
OMOJOMI: You know I have been hearing about Golden Rule and Platinum Rule since my final year. My lecturer said, as an international student or a global citizen, you MUST learn these two rules. If you want to work in media, in this Nigeria and outside Nigeria, you must know them.
SIMI: Golden rule? Platinum rule? Is it like Golden Morn? Is it food?
OMOJOMI: Not food. It's a principle of life. The Golden Rule is...[laughs]
IYA OLOMO: [enters, carrying her empty basin on her head, but majestically. She switches to perfect English] Bonsoir, mes enfants. Good evening, my children. What Golden Rule are you arguing about?
WURA: Mummy welcome! Omojomi said he wants to teach us international rules.
IYA OLOMO: [drops basin, sits on low stool, peels an orange with elegance] Eh-heh. International? My son, you travelled inside book, I travelled with my legs. Ask me.
She smiles and shares the orange.
OMOJOMI: Mummy, okay, tell us then. What's Golden Rule and what's Platinum Rule? And how can I, a Mass Comm graduate, be the salt of the nation through these two rules?
IYA OLOMO: You asked two big questions at once. Okay, make I teach you like market.[laughs]
1. THE GOLDEN RULE
IYA OLOMO: The Golden Rule is what Jesus said in Matthew 7:12 - "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
When I was in Accra, Ghana, selling mango, a woman cheated me. I was very angry. But I asked myself - How would I want to be treated if I was tired and far from home like her? I forgave her. That is Golden Rule.
If you want respect, my children, give respect. If you want kindness, show kindness. If you want forgiveness, learn to forgive. It is putting yourself in the other person's slippers.
SIMI: So it's like treating everybody how I want them to treat me.
IYA OLOMO: Exactly! If we all do that, family will be healthy, street will be safe. That is salt small-small.
2. THE PLATINUM RULE
WURA: Then what is Platinum Rule? Platinum is more expensive than Gold now.
IYA OLOMO: Correct! Platinum is higher! The Platinum Rule says - "Treat others the way THEY want to be treated."
Golden Rule assumes everybody wants what you want. Platinum Rule says NO. We are different.
She looks at each child.
IYA OLOMO: Omojomi, when you are sad, you want to talk and talk. When Simi is sad, she wants everybody to leave her alone and give her space. If I use Golden Rule for both of you, I will force Simi to talk. But if I use Platinum Rule, I will listen to know what each of you NEEDS.
Somebody needs to be heard. Another needs food. Another needs protection. Another needs compassion, not advice.
When I was in Nairobi, I greeted an old man 'Shikamoo'. In Kenya, that's respect. If I greeted him with Yoruba "Ẹ ku owuro", he would not understand my respect. I had to treat him how HE understands respect. That is Platinum Rule.
OMOJOMI: [eyes widening] Wow. So Golden Rule is about my heart, Platinum Rule is about my ears - listening.
IYA OLOMO: My Mass Comm graduate! You got it! And that brings you to your second question.
3. HOW TO BE THE SALT OF THE NATIONS
IYA OLOMO: Jesus said in Matthew 5:13 - You are the salt of the earth. Salt is small. Iya Olomo is small. But if salt enters soup, you know.
Salt does not force its taste. It does not shout. It just makes a difference. It preserves, it adds value, it brings balance.
Being the salt of the nation does not mean you must be President or be the loudest on Twitter. It means influencing with love, service, integrity, compassion, justice, and humility.
OMOJOMI: So how do I do it as a journalist?
IYA OLOMO: Ah!
IYA OLOMO: You use your camera, your pen, your voice.
Don't discriminate when you help people. Respect culture - Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, oyinbo. Welcome strangers. Stand against anything that removes human dignity. Listen before you judge and post. Share opportunities.
When you were small, we suffered. Your father died, market burnt. That pain could have made me bitter. But I decided to let my scar become a stream of compassion. I give extra fruit to that beggar at the park because I know what hunger is. That is salt.
You may have been hurt, but you can still choose to heal.
You may have been rejected, but you can still welcome others.
You may have known poverty, but you can still become generous.
WURA: Mummy...[teary]
IYA OLOMO: My children, John 10:16 talks about other sheep not of this fold. It means humanity must cross borders. Your humanity must not stop at your compound, your tribe, or your country.
OMOJOMI: So I will be the salt of my family, my community, my nation, and the nations?
IYA OLOMO: Yes! The question a salt-person always asks is: "What can I do to make life better for someone else today?" If you ask that every day, that question will transform your family, your office, your nation, and this global community.
She stands up, beautiful, wrapper glowing in the evening light.
IYA OLOMO: So, my children, remember:
Be the salt of the nation: live by the Golden Rule, listen through the Platinum Rule, and let your compassion cross every border until humanity becomes a shared responsibility of the global community.
SIMI & WURA & OMOJOMI: Be the salt![together]
IYA OLOMO: [in French] Maintenant, qui veut de l'ananas? Now, who wants pineapple?
They all laugh as she shares her fruits.

Good morning blessed families in the global communities, happy news week.
Topic: Restoration of Humanity in the Global Community
The restoration of humanity begins with recognizing the dignity and value of every human being. It calls us to replace hatred with love, indifference with compassion, rejection with inclusion, and division with unity.
Restoring humanity means caring for vulnerable people, supporting families, protecting children, including persons with disabilities, helping those in need, promoting peace, and treating people with respect regardless of their background, nationality or social status.
Our personal wounds and experiences should not become weapons against others. Instead, let our scars become streams of compassion, our pain produce understanding, and our lives become sources of hope and healing.
Humanity is restored through everyday actions—kindness, forgiveness, service, justice, peace, hospitality and love. When individuals build healthy families, families strengthen communities, and communities work together across borders, we contribute to a more compassionate global community.
> “Restoring humanity begins with one heart choosing compassion, one hand choosing to help, and one life choosing to make a difference.”
