Like many thriving businessmen, Iyke listened to the calls made by prominent people to train and support the next generation of businessmen so the globally recognised Igbo apprentice system would not die. When he stabilised his business, he took in some boys to learn and work under him. That singular decision made him lose his life over the weekend when a pestle landed on his head.

What happened?

Chiemerie was one of the boys he was training in business and typical to the Igbo system, the training does not end in business alone. The man brings you into his home so while learning business, you also have a good life and a place to stay. It is the usual approach and I saw this growing up in Onitsha.

Iyke had a thriving business in one of the markets in Onitsha and this particular boy had been a thorn in his flesh for a while. Over the Christmas period, as reported by people aware of the boy's behaviour, there were plans to take him back to his family, but they pleaded with Iyke and promised Chiemerie would turn a new leaf and do better like other boys. Having young boys in their early twenties in your home is never easy. Many are exposed to hard drugs and dangerous gangs and you never know what may be going on.

Over the weekend, Iyke was out with his family, and when it got late, one of the other apprentices at home called to tell him Chiemerie was not yet back at the house. It was already very late into the night. Iyke instructed the apprentice to return the call when Chiemerie got back and told him to go back to wherever he was coming from by that time of the night.

It was a simple instruction to instill discipline.

But the young boy hid in the house and waited for his boss to return. He then used a pestle to hit him on the head and he collapsed on the floor, leading to his death. The young boy found the sister of his boss and also hit her, but she managed to survive and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
