But marriage is not supposed to be a classroom for punishment.

You may think you are cheating the woman, but you are also creating consequences for yourself, your children and the entire family structure.

Two homes mean divided responsibilities. Two sets of children can mean complicated inheritance issues. Rivalry between households can become rivalry between children.

Before you use culture as a justification, ask yourself one question:

Does this practice still build the kind of family we want our children to inherit?

Because being traditional does not automatically make something healthy.

We need to learn how to upgrade.

The same people who invented Nokia 3310 did not stop there. Technology kept evolving,from Nokia 3310 to smartphones, Android and iPhone. They did not say, “This is what our forefathers invented, so we must remain here forever.”

But when it comes to some of our cultural practices, we suddenly become afraid of change.

We keep saying, “It is our culture.”

Culture is not supposed to be a prison.

If a practice no longer serves the society we live in, we should have the wisdom to examine it and, where necessary, let it go.

Some men think polygamy is a way to “pepper” or punish a woman. But life does not always end where you think it will.

If relationships become increasingly complicated and questions about biological parentage arise, modern courts can rely on DNA evidence when determining biological relationships. A man who assumes that every child born within his marriage is biologically his may one day discover otherwise.

And then what?

After years of feeding, educating and sacrificing for a child, you may discover through DNA that the child is biologically related to another man.

This is why we need to stop using marriage and children as weapons in the battle between men and women.

If the world can upgrade its technology, why can't we upgrade the cultural practices that no longer serve us?

Keep the culture that gives us identity.
Keep the values that give us dignity.
But have the courage to leave behind practices that create unnecessary suffering.

Progress is not the destruction of culture. Sometimes, progress is culture learning how to evolve.

It is not traditionally our culture to subject every child to DNA testing. Once bride price has been paid and a child is born within the marriage, that child is traditionally regarded as the husband’s child and belongs to his family.

So, if society is going to accept polygamy and continue pressuring women to accept it as part of marriage, then men should also understand the consequences of that system.

You cannot embrace a system that creates room for complicated family situations and then turn around tomorrow, crying that you spent years raising a child who is not biologically yours.

If DNA is now considered necessary, then let it be approached openly and consistently,not only when suspicion arises after years of marriage and sacrifice.

Being a firstborn is a calling wrapped in responsibility ,to lead, protect, and sacrifice, often carrying burdens no one sees.

Many firstborns grow up too quickly, hiding their own struggles just to stay strong.

Today I pray for you:

May God strengthen you where you are weary.
May He reward your silent sacrifices.
May battles you inherited end with you.
May you never lose your dreams while carrying responsibilities.
May doors of favour open for you, and may your efforts produce outstanding results.

You will not only open doors for others, you will walk through doors of greatness yourself.
