Exactly 9yrs ago I competed for and won the coveted Royal Society of Chemistry researcher mobility predoctoral fellowship

It took me to the University of Bradford and without it I would never have completed my PhD
I still thank God everyday for this blessing

Lantana camara: uses & toxicity

This pretty plant is called Lantana camara
It’s not just beautiful, it smells so good!
To me, anyway!
It’s for is due to its high content of essential oils which are very medicinal

The plant I photographed here is growing in my medicinal garden, though it wasn’t planted, it grew on its own!

Luckily for me it is the Yellow-pink variety because Lantana camara is a toxic plant, it contains Pentacyclic triterpenoids called Lantadenes

The content of Lantadenes in this plant can be determined by the colors of its flowers

The yellow-red variety has the highest amount of Lantadenes and should be avoided

The white pink variety is mildly toxic

The yellow-pink variety however has only slight traces of Lantadenes hence is non toxic

In herbal medicine, the yellow-pink one is the preferred variety to use for oral herbal formulations

Luckily, that’s what I have growing on my garden

Although Lantana camara it’s very medicinal, I do not use it for oral formulations but only topical formulations

This is because I’m careful with toxic plants

Oral uses:

✅antifungal and anti bacterial

✅ antiulcerogenic (treats ulcers)

✅anti inflammatory

Its properties above can be applied to topical use for treating skin infections and for wound healing

Please ONLY USE THE YELLOW PINK VARIETY. Stay away from the others

CAUTION: THE UNRIPE/ GREEN FRUITS ARE POISONOUS too

I’m very much interested in distilling this plant to get its essential oils which have very interesting medicinal properties as well as for its unique and distinctive aroma
