The Most Expensive Mistake You Can Make Before Cutting Fabric
After training fashion designers for almost three decades, I've noticed something that separates professionals from those who struggle to produce consistent results.
It isn't the sewing machine they use.
It isn't the type of fabric they buy.
It isn't even how long they've been sewing.
It's what happens before the scissors touch the fabric.
Many beginners are eager to cut immediately after taking measurements. They believe the cutting is where the real work begins.
It isn't.
The real work begins with understanding the body, interpreting the measurements correctly, and drafting an accurate pattern.
A good pattern is like the foundation of a building. If the foundation is wrong, no amount of decoration will make the building stable.
The same applies to clothing.
I've seen beautifully sewn garments that still looked disappointing because the pattern was wrong from the beginning.
I've also seen simple garments look elegant because the pattern was accurate.
Whenever one of my students tells me, "This garment doesn't fit the way I imagined," my first question is rarely about the sewing.
I ask, "Let's look at your pattern."
More often than not, that's where we find the answer.
This is why I encourage every aspiring fashion designer to spend as much time mastering pattern drafting as they spend practising sewing techniques.
Sewing joins pieces together.
Pattern drafting determines whether those pieces will fit beautifully when they're joined.
If you're serious about becoming a fashion designer whose work speaks for itself, don't rush the process.
Master the foundation.
Everything else becomes easier from there.

People know the brand Emily Matthews, but today I'd like you to meet the woman behind it.
My name is Bunmi Adebola.
I studied Economics, but my heart found its home in fashion.
Nearly 28 years ago, I chose a path that many people considered uncertain. Looking back today, I can confidently say it was one of the most rewarding decisions of my life.
That decision gave birth to Emily Matthews Global Limited, a fashion design and garment manufacturing company that has now served clients for over 20 years.
Over the years, I have worn many hats.
I am a fashion designer.
A pattern drafting specialist.
A trainer and coach.
An author.
A publisher.
A wife.
A mother of four.
A Christian minister.
Each of these roles has shaped how I approach my work.
To me, fashion has never been just about making beautiful clothes.
It is about helping people discover confidence.
It is about creating opportunities.
It is about giving people a skill that can change the course of their lives.
That is why I have partnered with government agencies, NGOs and faith-based organisations to train aspiring fashion designers.
It is also why we have offered tuition-free training programmes that have equipped hundreds of people with practical skills they can use to build a better future.
Along the way, I realised that many talented people struggled because they lacked access to clear, practical learning resources.
That inspired me to write my books, Sewing Demystified and Excelling at Bustier Blocking, so that more people could learn with confidence and avoid the mistakes that slow many beginners down.
Today, my mission is bigger than running a fashion business.
I want to raise a new generation of skilled, confident and ethical fashion professionals while continuing to create garments that make women look elegant and feel their very best.
