When you look at a long strand of hair, you’re actually looking at something that has been growing for years.

Hair grows from the follicle beneath the scalp at an average rate of about 0.5 inches per month. That may seem slow, but over time it adds up.

For example:

• Hair that is 12 inches long may be around 2 years old.
• Hair that is 24 inches long could be about 4 years old.

This means the ends of long hair have been exposed to years of brushing, styling, sunlight, friction, and environmental stress.

That’s why the ends of the hair often feel drier or more fragile than the roots. The newer hair near the scalp is younger and less exposed, while the ends have simply lived longer.

Hair length is not just growth.

It is also how well the oldest part of the strand survives over time.

In other words:

Growth happens at the root.
Age shows at the ends.

Did you know the ends of long hair could be years old?

Most people think their hair is ā€œalive,ā€ but scientifically, the strand you see is not living tissue.

Hair is made of keratin... the same structural protein found in nails and the outer layer of skin.

As hair forms inside the follicle beneath the scalp, the cells gradually fill with keratin and lose their internal structures. By the time the strand emerges from the scalp, those cells are no longer living.

This is why cutting your hair doesn’t hurt.

The strand itself cannot repair or regenerate like living tissue. When hair becomes damaged from heat, chemicals, or friction, it cannot truly ā€œheal.ā€ Products can help improve how the hair looks and behaves, but the strand itself does not repair the way skin does.

The living part of the hair exists beneath the scalp, inside the follicle where new hair is produced.

Understanding this changes how we think about hair care.

Hair doesn’t live.
It grows.

Did you know the hair strand itself isn’t alive?

Hair masks and regular conditioners are often confused, but they serve slightly different roles in hair care.

Regular conditioners are designed for frequent use after washing. Their main job is to smooth the hair surface, improve manageability, and restore basic moisture after cleansing.

Hair masks, however, are more concentrated treatments.

They usually contain richer conditioning agents, oils, proteins, and nourishing ingredients that stay on the hair longer. Because they remain on the hair for several minutes, they can pe*****te the outer layers of the strand more effectively than quick conditioners.

Hair masks are especially useful when hair has been exposed to:

• Heat styling
• Chemical services
• Environmental stress
• Frequent manipulation

They help restore softness, improve flexibility, and support the hair’s overall condition.

Think of it this way:

Conditioners maintain everyday softness.
Masks help the hair recover when it needs extra support.

Using them appropriately helps keep the hair balanced between daily care and deeper nourishment.

How often do you use a hair mask?

Hair serums are often mistaken for treatment products, but their main role is surface control.

A serum is typically a lightweight, silicone-based formula designed to sit on the outside of the hair strand. When applied, it smooths the cuticle (the outer protective layer of the hair).

When the cuticle lies flatter:

• Frizz becomes less noticeable
• Strands glide past each other more easily
• Light reflects more evenly — which creates shine

This is why hair can look instantly smoother after applying serum.

Serums also help reduce friction between strands. Less friction means fewer tangles and less mechanical damage during styling.

However, serums mainly work on the surface of the hair, not deep inside the strand. Their role is to polish and protect the outer layer, not rebuild internal structure.

In simple terms:

Serums don’t change the hair itself.
They change how the hair behaves and reflects light.

Do you use hair serum mainly for…?
