Lagos State Malaria: Elimination Programme LSMEP

The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Prof. Akin Abayomi, delivers the keynote address at the IMPACT (Malaria Component) Project End-of-Project Dissemination Meeting, emphasizing that the gathering marks not the end of the IMPACT Project, but the dissemination of its findings and the beginning of a new era in malaria control and public health research in Lagos State—and by extension, Nigeria. Reflecting on the project’s achievements, he highlighted the successful ex*****on of Nigeria’s largest field study on malaria, which assessed over 78,000 patients presenting with fever across approximately 400 health facilities statewide. The findings revealed that only about 5% of fever cases were attributable to malaria, challenging long-held assumptions about fever diagnosis and paving the way for a new area of investigation—Malaria Negative Fevers (MNF). The Day 2 session of the stakeholders’ meeting organized by SFH in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Health through the Directorate of Disease Control and Lagos State Malaria Elimination program, was held at Dovers Hotel Armoire, Ikeja on the 21st of May, 2026.
The meeting focused on the theme: “Consolidating Gains, Addressing Bottlenecks, and Strengthening Public-Private Engagement for Malaria Elimination in Lagos State.”
The session had in attendance Directors, Heads of Units/Departments, including representatives from Laboratory Services, Pharmaceutical Services, Health Management Information System (HMIS), Primary Health Care (PHC), and General Hospitals across Lagos State. Representatives from HEFAMAA were also present and delivered a presentation on private sector integration rationale, validation outcomes, identified challenges, and coordination mechanisms for improved malaria service delivery.
The meeting commenced with a goodwill message delivered by the SFH representative, followed by a presentation from the IMPACT Project Manager on the Lagos Malaria IMPACT Project overview, highlighting Year 1–3 milestones and achievements recorded during the implementation period.
Subsequently, representatives from SFH presented on the progress and performance review of implementation activities across Case Management and Commodities, emphasizing achievements, gaps, and lessons learned.
The Lagos State Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officer thereafter delivered a presentation on data quality and surveillance, data reporting systems, validation outcomes, identified challenges, and the use of data for evidence-based decision-making in malaria programming.
This was followed by an engaging Questions to and Answers session where participants discussed key implementation concerns and possible solutions.
Participants later proceeded into breakout group sessions to deliberate on sustainability roadmaps, recommendations, stakeholder roles, and implementation timelines aimed at strengthening malaria elimination efforts in Lagos State.
The meeting concluded with closing remarks delivered by a representative of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, after which participants took group photographs to mark the successful end of the Day 2 session.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health through the Directorate of Disease Control and the Lagos State Malaria Elimination Programme, in partnership with Society for Family Health, held a stakeholders’ meeting for the Lagos IMPACT Project Year 3 Review on the 21st May 2026 (Day 1)

The meeting focused on the theme: “Consolidating Gains, Addressing Bottlenecks, and Strengthening Public-Private Engagement for Malaria Elimination in Lagos State.”

Discussions centered on the progress and performance review of project implementation across various thematic areas, including case management, commodities and logistics, supportive supervision visits (SSV), SBCC, and community activities.

Participants at the meeting comprised Directors of Medical Services, RBMMS representatives, pharmacists, laboratory scientists/technicians, and Health Educators from the PHCB, alongside other key stakeholders in malaria prevention and control. Representatives of Society for Family Health anchoring the various thematic sections delivered presentations, which further stimulated robust discussions among participants on activities conducted, key findings, challenges encountered, and the way forward toward improving malaria prevention and control efforts in Lagos State.

Stakeholders also discussed sustainability plans, ownership, and continuity of interventions beyond the lifespan of the project to ensure lasting impact and sustained progress toward malaria elimination efforts in the state.

The meeting concluded with stakeholders presenting closing resolutions and reaffirming their commitment to strengthening collaboration and supporting sustained malaria elimination interventions across Lagos State.
