Cataract & Glaucoma:
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision.
The causes include:
1. Aging: Most common cause, due to protein changes in the lens.
2. Trauma: Injury to the eye can cause cataract formation.
3. Diabetes: High blood sugar levels damage lens fibers.
4. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation: Prolonged exposure increases risk.
5. Genetics: Family history plays a role.
6. Medications: Steroids, certain antibiotics, and antihistamines.
7. Infections: Bacterial or viral infections during pregnancy.
8. Poor nutrition: Deficiencies in vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene.
9. Smoking: Increases risk of nuclear cataracts.
Causes of Glaucoma:
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss.
Causes include:
1. Increased intraocular pressure (IOP):
Most common cause.
2. Genetics: Family history increases risk.
3. Age: Risk increases after 40 years.
4. Diabetes: High blood sugar levels damage optic nerve.
5. Hypertension: High blood pressure increases IOP.
6. Eye trauma: Injury can increase IOP.
7. Certain medications: Steroids, antihistamines, and some antidepressants.
8. Near-sightedness (myopia): Increases risk.
9. African or Asian ancestry: Higher risk.
There is a linkage and co-morbidity between cataract and glaucoma:
1. Shared risk factors: Aging, diabetes, hypertension, and genetics.
2. Increased IOP: Cataract surgery can increase IOP, exacerbating glaucoma.
3. Cataract surgery complications: Glaucoma patients have higher risks.
4. Glaucoma medication: Some medications increase cataract risk.
5. Common underlying conditions: Diabetes, hypertension, and vascular disease.
6. Simultaneous occurrence: Cataract and glaucoma often co-exist.
Co-morbidity statistics:
1. 20-30% of glaucoma patients develop cataracts.
2. 10-20% of cataract patients have glaucoma.
3. 50% of patients with both conditions experience vision impairment.
Implications:
1. Comprehensive eye exams: Essential for early detection.
2. Multidisciplinary care: Coordination between ophthalmologists and optometrists.
3. Personalized treatment plans: Addressing co-morbidities and individual needs.
4. Increased awareness: Educating patients about shared risk factors.

Africa and Manufactured Goods Export
The top leading country in export in Asia remains China with yearly export of $3.59 trillion. Followed by Japan with annual value of $753 billion and third place is S. Korea with a yearly export value of $683.58 billion. Hong Kong has a yearly value of $611.48 billion, Singapore is $515.06 billion.
In Asia these countries are followed by Taiwan, Vietnam, India, Malaysia, and Indonesia, rounding out the top 10 largest exporters in Asia.
Infact China is not just leading in Asia but also generally contributing about 28% of total manufactured export products in the world followed by US, Germany, Netherlands before Japan.
If Africa must achieve these milestones, 1st the countries in this region must come out seriously, collectively and individually to diversify production beyond primary commodities and focus on value-added products.
Africa must invest in infrastructure, developing transportation network, port and logistics. We need to create manufacturing and export oriented industrial hubs in addition to the current effort on free trade that will leverage cross boarder trade agreement as in what we have currently in AfCFTA.
Then we must be intentional about enhancing workforce capabilities and technological expertise through skill development and training. Encouraging foreign investment will also help to boost manufacturing capacity while we forster regional integration to strengthen regional trades.
Our business environment is still poor with a lot policy flips and inconsistencies. So we must streamline regulations reduce bureaucracy, develop deliberate export oriented policies, like tax incentives and export financing and increase transparency.
Technology and innovations rule the world and Africa must not be found lacking here if we must join the world stage. So we must adapt or adopt modern technologies and innovative practices. These things will help to unlock our manufacturing potential increase our exports and drive economic growth.
Our transportation networks in African and even in Nigeria is in so much deficits and this has significant impact on our manufacturing and export capacities.
The transport deficit has resulted in higher transportation costs due to inadequate infrastructure, leading to higher production costs and reduced competitiveness. There are delays and inefficiencies in transportation networks, resulting in longer lead times and reduced productivity.
We have limited transportation infrastructure hindering access to domestic and international markets and limiting export opportunities. These in turn lead to reduced trade volumes, negatively impacting economic growth.
Another impact of transportation infrastructure deficit is that it increases the risk of spoilage and damage to goods, particularly perishable products.
We may also talk about the same deficit in how it deters foreign investors, who seek efficient and reliable logistics.
In Nigeria transportation deficits have been exacerbated by poor road conditions, inadequate port infrastructure, limited rail network, congested airport and inefficient cargo handling.
To address these challenges, Nigeria should invest in more infrastructure development (roads, ports, railways, airports), embark on transportation policy reforms, encourage private sector participation, float a more robust Logistics and supply chain management and prioritize trade facilitation measures. If we address transportation deficits, Nigeria can enhance manufacturing and export capacity, driving economic growth and development.
