Sometimes the insecurity you’re fighting today didn’t start today.

I think I carried something from secondary school into adulthood without even realizing it.

I remember my secondary school days so vividly, especially because I was a boarder.

There were always these groups of girls who had already formed their own little teams. They moved together, talked together, did things together and if you weren’t part of that circle, you could easily feel like you didn’t exist.

I remember how sometimes I would be there, but still feel alone.

You want to contribute to a conversation, but somehow you just don’t feel confident enough to speak. Even when you say something funny , they won’t laugh 😂

You want to say something, but you start thinking, “Will they even listen to me?”

And gradually, you become quiet.
You start feeling small.

At the time, I didn’t know that experiences like that could affect the way a person sees herself.

But looking back now, I realize I carried some of that mindset with me.

Even as I grew older, there were times I found myself feeling like my opinion wasn’t important.

Especially when I’m in an environment where people already have their own circle or where your ideas are constantly overlooked.

I can feel myself going back to that little girl who just sits quietly because she doesn’t want to feel rejected.

And another thing I have realized is that sometimes people judge you over things that honestly don’t even matter.

The fact that you’re quiet.

The fact that you don’t belong to their circle.

Sometimes people make you feel like you have to prove yourself before you deserve to be heard.

But I’m learning something now.

I don’t have to shrink myself because a particular room doesn’t know how to receive me.

My voice is still my voice.

My ideas are still valuable.

And being left out of someone’s circle doesn’t mean there is something wrong with me.
