🌊 NWORIE RIVER — A PART OF OWERRI’S STORY

When we talk about Owerri, we often talk about our streets, markets, schools, churches and communities. But there is another part of our city that has quietly witnessed generations come and go — Nworie River.

Nworie River flows through Owerri before joining the Otamiri River around Nekede. For many years, it has been part of the life of communities around it, supporting different forms of human activity and serving as an important natural feature of the city. (Wikipedia)

But today, the story of Nworie is also a painful one.

Studies have repeatedly raised concerns about pollution caused by untreated wastewater, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, urban runoff and other human activities. Recent research published in 2025 and 2026 has continued to find serious contamination concerns, including heavy metals and microbial pollution. (mbimph.com)

The question is: must a river that has been part of our community for generations be allowed to die?

Nworie River is more than just water flowing through Owerri. It is part of our environment, our history and our heritage.

We need to start asking for better waste management, proper treatment of wastewater, environmental enforcement and serious efforts to restore the river.

A clean Nworie River would not only protect public health — it would remind us that development is not complete when we build roads and houses. Development must also mean protecting the natural resources that belong to future generations.

# The Strength of Family

There was once a young man who grew up in a humble home with his parents and two younger sisters. They did not have much money, but their home was filled with something more valuable—love.

His father always told him, “Son, money can build a house, but only love can build a home.”

As he grew older, life became difficult. His father lost his job, and the family struggled to pay their bills. He had dreams of leaving the village to make a better life for himself, but he could not forget the sacrifices his parents had made for him.

One day, he received an opportunity to travel to the city for a good job. It was everything he had prayed for. But just before he left, his mother became seriously ill, and the family had no money for her treatment.

He faced a difficult decision.

He could take the job and pursue his dream, or stay and help his family.

After thinking deeply, he told himself, “A man's greatest success is not what he achieves alone, but what he is able to do for the people who stood by him when he had nothing.”

He stayed.

He worked small jobs during the day and cared for his mother at night. His sisters also helped however they could. His father, despite his weakness, encouraged everyone to remain united.

Months passed.

His mother recovered.

Later, he finally travelled to the city. Because of the discipline, courage, and values his family had taught him, he worked hard and eventually became successful.

Years later, he returned home with enough money to build a beautiful house for his parents.

His father looked at the house and smiled.

“You have done well, my son,” he said.

He shook his head and replied, “No, Dad. We did well. I could never have come this far without my family.”

His father smiled proudly.

“Now you understand,” he said. “The greatest wealth is not the money in your account. It is having people who will stand with you when life becomes difficult.”

Family is not about having a perfect life. It is about standing together when life is far from perfect.

Money can disappear. Friends can leave. Success can change your circumstances. But when a family is built on love, respect, forgiveness, sacrifice, and unity, it becomes a foundation that can survive almost anything.

Never be too busy to love your family. Never be too proud to forgive. Never forget the people who stood beside you when you had nothing.

Because at the end of the day, success means little if you have nobody you love to share it with.

Family is not just where you come from. Family is the strength that helps you become who you were meant to be.
