GOV FUBARA FROWNS AT SLOW PACE OF WORK AT OKRIKA GRAMMAR SCHOOL
•Says Quality Delivered Must Justify Fund
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed displeasure at the slow pace of work by the contractors handling the total reconstruction of structures and landscaping at the Okrika Grammar School (OGS) in Okrika Local Government Area of the State.
Governor Fubara expressed his disappointment when he visited the project site on Monday to inspect and ascertain the extent of work down.
The Governor wondered why the Commissioner for Education had informed him wrongly that 70 percent work has been achieved while what he could see was far below the impression created.
Visibly angry, the Governor said he will summon a meeting with the contractors immediately to read the riot act to them and re-emphasise strict compliance to project specifications and timelines that were mutually agreed.
He said, "I have heard several reports from the Commissioner for Education, giving me updates, and I felt this is my constituency, so, I should visit.
"As a matter of fact, Okrika is dear to me, so I need to see for myself the extent of work done and the standard delivered too.
'My assessment; I need to be very raw: I am not satisfied. That is the truth. The Commissioner gave me the impression that 70 percent of the job has been done, but from what I am seeing here, I need to takeover the supervision of this project to make sure I give my people a standard Grammar School again."
Governor Fubara explained that the project of revamping the Okrika Grammar School (OGS) is focused on remodelling the once foremost secondary school in the State.
The Governor recalled that the OGS had produced a good number of great men who have become renowned in politics and other special areas of their disciplines not only in Rivers State but across the world.
Governor Fubara stated: "We were touched by the very deplorable state of the foremost school, and our government decided that we should give it a face-lift, and since after the award of this contract, we have not visited the school. So, we are doing it today.
"I understand the issue of price difference. We can discuss those variations, but the quality must match the amount that is spent.
"You know I am somebody who deals with figures, so, there must be value for money. And by the end, our people need to be happy that we have done this, and I also need to be happy that I did what is needed for our people."
Governor Fubara explained that his government had paid 100 percent of the contract sum for the project, adding that he has resolved now to take over the regular supervision of the project.
The Governor also inspected the state of work on the Woji-Akpajo-Alesa-Eleme-Port Harcourt Refinery Road and bridge.

RSG, NLNG Seal Employment Deal For Rivers Youths
Rivers State Government has reached an agreement with Nigeria Liquidfied Natural Gas (NLNG) and its contractors, Daewoo and Saipem, to reserve a substantial percentage of employment opportunities, especially for youths in communities across the State.
The pact, which was facilitated by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Engr Charles Amadi, and his Employment Generation and Empowerment counterpart, Sir Austin Emeka Nnadozie, in Port Harcourt, aims to provide the much-needed jobs for residents and contribute to the advancement of the state's economy.
The State Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Engr Charles Amadi, highlighted the importance of accommodating other communities to maintain the existing peace in NLNG's operational areas and the state at large.
Engr Amadi thanked the organization for their understanding, and expressed hope that more employment opportunities will be given to other Rivers communities in their next project.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Employment Generation and Empowerment, Sir Austin Emeka Nnadozie, stated that the ministry has been working tirelessly to create job opportunities and to advance development in Rivers State.
The collaboration with NLNG, Sir Nnadozie noted, "is a testament to the ministry's efforts to engage with key stakeholders and drive growth".
On his part, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Samuel Egumah, stated that companies operating in the State traditionally allocate 60% of employment chances to the host community, 30% to the state government, while 10% is reserved for the company.
Explaining further, the Permanent Secretary said the reason is to foster inclusiveness, ensuring that all communities impacted by a company's operations benefit from the employment opportunities.
Responding, NLNG's Corporate Liaison Manager, Train 7, Dr. Joshua Anemeje, assured that going forward, the company will consider the state government's interests in future projects, adding that the remaining employment opportunities will focus on highly skilled professionals since the Train 7 project is already 70% complete.
Details of the agreement, including the specific percentage of employment opportunities reserved for other communities in the State were not disclosed.
However, the partnership is seen as a crucial step towards addressing unemployment issues in the region.
This initiative also demonstrates the state government's commitment to empowering citizens and driving growth through strategic partnerships, paving the way for similar initiatives in the future.
