France 1998-A team made in Serie A ‼️

When France 🇫🇷 won the World Cup on home soil in 1998, seven of the main starting XI had played in Serie A. In fact, five players were already playing in Italy at that time in addition to Karembeu and Blanc who spent some time there with Sampdoria and Napoli, respectively.

In his seminal book “ Zonal Marking”. Michael Cox has argued that France stylistically were playing like an Italian side.

He also noted that “ France were essentially an Italian side, simply with more talented individuals”

Aime Jacquet’s France team was based on a solid back four, three defensive midfielders with Zidane playing as the No. 10 and Djorkaeff and Guivarch ahead of him. Quite a cautious setup that had lots of resemblance to conservative Serie A tactics.

As mentioned above, half of France starting outfield players are playing in the Italian league. The remaining players included two from the French league, one from the premier league, one from the Bundesliga and one from the Spanish La Liga.

With the French players playing in the biggest European leagues and gaining important winning know-how at their clubs. For example, Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira won the double with Arsenal. Deschamps and Zidane won the Scudetto with Juventus. Bixente Lizarazu won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and Christian Karembeu won the champions league with Real Madrid.
