Why Alpha Arbutin Doesn’t Belong in Black Soap 🧼🚫
Alpha arbutin is a brightening active — but black soap is one of the worst formats to put it in. Here’s why:
🔸 Black soap is alkaline (pH 9-10+). Alpha arbutin is only stable in a narrow, more acidic pH range. In a high-pH base, it breaks down — and may even convert to hydroquinone, which we don’t want.
🔸 It’s a rinse-off product. Most Skin brightening actives need contact time to work. A few seconds of lather and rinse isn’t enough for arbutin to do anything meaningful before it’s washed away.
🔸 You’re wasting a good (and pricey) active. If you want brightening in a wash product, better options exist that actually hold up in alkaline, rinse-off systems.
Formulating isn’t just “adding the trendy ingredient” — it’s about knowing what your base can actually support. 💡

The true trick is to apply oil immediately on damp skin right after a shower to trap the water inside.
