MUST NNPCL BE SOLE OFF-TAKER OF DANGOTE FUEL?

The decision by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, to be the sole off-taker of Dangote fuel has not gone down well with most end users of the product in Nigeria. In fact, business experts and even Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria , IPMAN, are of the strong opinion that if it is opened up, the price would crash down.

Unfortunately, contrary to experts' opinion, NNPCL is unyielding, by holding on to the role of sole off-taker while Nigerians continue to bear the brunt of incessant increase in prices of petroleum products.

This is the same NNPCL that has not been able to bring any of the country's ailing refineries back to life, having spent billions of naira for rehabilitation over the years.

Arguably, this singular action of NNPCL in the face of current excruciating economic challenges in the country has become questionable.

It can be said that the NNPCL has failed in it's major responsibility to refine petroleum products for local consumption and export; a situation that would have helped to drastically reduce hardship and poverty.

Instead of demonstrating genuine commitment to getting the country's refineries back on track, the company is forcefully making itself the sole off-taker of fuel from Dangote refinery, an organization diligently put together by a single individual. Is it not shameful?

If IPMAN and other industry experts have argued that without NNPCL being the sole off-taker of Dangote fuel, the price of the product will crash, why the insistence on the role of a middle man?

I think it's appropriate for critical stakeholders, either as individuals or organizations, to begin to ask questions about the real intentions of the country's petroleum company on issues of this nature.
