📜 A Remarkable Story of Determination — 1905

More than a century ago, a photograph captured an extraordinary study scene involving a student of the University of Madras.

The 1905 image, published in V. M. Doroshevich’s East and War, shows a student preparing for examinations at a desk. What makes the photograph so striking is the unusual method he reportedly used to fight sleep: his long hair was tied to a nail in the wall so that if he nodded off and slumped forward, the pull would wake him.

At a time when studying conditions were very different from today, the photograph became a powerful illustration of the lengths to which some students went to remain awake and continue their studies.

It is a fascinating glimpse into student life in colonial-era India—and a reminder that the desire to learn and succeed is certainly not a modern phenomenon. 📚✨

Historical note: The photograph is genuine and dates to 1905. The accompanying historical description identifies the subject as a University of Madras student and explains the hair-to-nail detail as a way of preventing sleep. The claim that the photograph itself was specifically taken at night is less certain, so that detail should be treated cautiously.

Would you have been able to study like this? 😳📚
