Lip blush is one of those treatments people don't always think to ask about, but it makes a real difference day to day.

Most clients aren't after a completely different lip shape. It's more about restoring natural colour that's faded over time, defining the border a little more clearly, and giving the appearance of fuller, more even lips, without fillers. Some clients want a soft, barely-there n**e. Others prefer a healthy pink glow. Both are simple to work toward once we've talked through what you're after.

As with brows and eyeliner, nothing happens until you're happy with how it looks. We talk through the shape and tone together first, so there are no surprises.

Technique trends in cosmetic tattooing come and go, much like flared jeans or skinny jeans. What's popular right now won't necessarily still be popular in five years.

That's part of why I've always focused on working with a client's natural face and skin, rather than chasing whatever style is trending. It's a philosophy that comes from where I trained. Years ago I worked as Business Development Manager for Natural Enhancement in Chiswick, London, the UK's leading Micro Pigmentation Academy at the time, and trained there as a cosmetic tattooing technician under Tracey Simpson, the academy's managing director and an internationally recognised leader in the field.

I also attended distributor conferences in Berlin and helped run regular workshop days in London, keeping technicians current on technique and equipment. That grounding in proper training and process has stayed with me ever since moving back to New Zealand in 2010 and opening Perfection Enhanced.

Thirty years in the beauty industry has taught me that good technique isn't about what's fashionable this year. It's about understanding a face well enough that the result still looks right in ten years, not just in photos taken the week after.

People are often surprised when I explain colour boosts. A little high maintenance to be low maintenance, really.

Pigment softens naturally over time, and a boost every 12 to 18 months is what keeps your brows, liner or lips looking fresh rather than faded. Leave it much longer than that, closer to two years, and it stops being a simple top-up. At that point it's more like starting again.
