Melanie Ryding

I'm a personal trainer with my own fat to fit story, retired international triathlete, total knee replacement Oct 2018.

I am a retired international athlete who raced on the world stage for five years following a weight loss transformation story that made national news in England. I retired from full time teaching in 2014 to set up my own fitness business and now work full time as a personal trainer, weight loss consultant and mental strength coach for Ryding2Health Ltd. I love to swim and cycle, go tramping, try new sports and prove people wrong. 'Your mind is your only limiter!'

Managing Director of Ryding2Health Limited: this is a new personal trainer page for me. For 17 years I was a special needs teacher. During this time I raced for Great Britain, after losing 32kg and making national news in my home country. I moved to New Zealand in 2013 and resigned from teaching to set up business in 2014. My business started out of the back of my car as a mobile Personal Trainer, and has since grown to a recently completed custom built premises. Although I no longer race, I still love to swim and cycle as well as tramping - as that is the only way to see the true parts of this beautiful land! You will usually find me either in the bush, in the pool, in the sea or up a hill somewhere, if I am not training people one on one and in groups to help them also realise their full potential!

Slightly different pool view today... this is Moana pool in Dunedin.

Well if he can park run everywhere he goes, then why canโ€™t I swim everywhere I go!?!

I had a precise amount of time spare so 1600m is what I could fit in.

Masters games short course pool champs about to start at the other end of the pool.

Love that, like my local, itโ€™s a 50m pool so can be split up with a bulk head and multiple things can be going on at once ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜Ž

We went to the Pulse Energy Highlanders first home game of the season today. Due to my meds, Iโ€™m drinking coffee (due to lack of low alcohol alternatives) while hubby is drinking beer.

At the end of the game, he asks what do I want to do now. Iโ€™m thinking he meant we leave and then where do I want to go.

I see him eyeing up the sideline and ask does he want to go down (usually the team come along and do signatures and photos with the fans).

โ€˜Nah Iโ€™m not that botheredโ€™ he replies. Then walks over in that direction. I follow him about 3 seating blocks and he heads down to the side of the pitch. Remember.. heโ€™s not that bothered, right?!

Oh no! I just missed Aaron Smith... (who has worked his way along the fence of fans and has already passed this spot.)

Thatโ€™s ok I reply, youโ€™re not that bothered, right?!

Nah not that bothered.

Well if youโ€™re not that bothered you could climb over that row of seats and go down to the next block and catch him.

Nah Iโ€™m not that bothered. As he heads off to climb over that row of seats.

Well Iโ€™m staying here, I reply, because Iโ€™m ACTUALLY really not that bothered!

Hereโ€™s my โ€˜heโ€™s not that botheredโ€™ evidence. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ™„

Life after a knee replacement: Larryโ€™s story

Iโ€™m on a quest to find athletes who have been able to return to their sport after a knee replacement, so we can collect some positive stories for those who face this op. Here is Larry's story. Larry is an ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ ULTRA RUNNER! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

I donโ€™t really care why this Highlanders shirt even exists instead of their traditional blue.. I just love the colour!!

Knee replacement โ€˜annualโ€™ follow up at the hospital. ๐Ÿ™„

Quickie: knee replacement (slightly late) annual follow up appt this morning. ๐Ÿค”

[02/02/20]   Some people are f*%kwits. Person parks next to me @ the pool, bashed my car with their door, knocking wing mirror/ glass off and says they canโ€™t see anything wrong before swiftly driving off! ๐Ÿคฌ

Today this happened...

Hubby dragged me (yes, dragged) into an escape room because .. well... thatโ€™s a fun thing to do with a Saturday isnโ€™t it? ๐Ÿค”

I was totally NOT sold on the whole thing at all. ๐Ÿ˜’Thankfully I found that I was NOT actually physically locked into the room (my biggest fear) but the vastly different ways we tackled the problem became more and more apparent!๐Ÿง

Mark raced around the room looking for clues and blindly tapping numbers into lock key pads, whereas I much preferred to sit down and have a think about the problem for a while.

We got out eventually (with a tiny bit of assistance). Had I been given a bit more time I would likely have got there on my own eventually!

He thinks it would be a fun day out for the staff team. ๐Ÿค”

31,025m of swimming completed in January! (Not sure where the 25 came from, I think my Garmin made it up!)

Thatโ€™s 1421 lengths and an average of 7,700m per week.

So itโ€™s fitting then to announce that I have now officially withdrawn from the Challenge Wanaka Aquabike race, and am now racing with a team who contacted me yesterday because their swimmer was injured.

So my 3000m suddenly became 1900m. Easy as!

This photo is from this morning - just as I was leaving they were putting the monster slide in place (they attach it to the 3m diving board). Looks waaaay more exciting that what I was doing! ๐Ÿคฃ

One more visit and Iโ€™ll crack the 30,000m ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Since my target for Jan was 20,000m, what goal shall I set next month ๐Ÿค” Bearing in mind it has 3 less days in it...

๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Meanwhile in other news, 10x100m sprints on the agenda today.. cracked sub 2 mins for 7 of the ten of them, for the first time in a long time. The other 3 - two were 2:00 exactly and one was 2:01 ๐Ÿ˜Ž

๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธTales from the swimming pool: Monday edition - โ€˜2 pronged attack/ accidental Fartlekโ€™ ๐Ÿคฃ

This morning before work I went to the pool. This was the only lane that was not already being used: bugger it I thought. I wasnโ€™t sure how far I would get in the time available so I set the watch to count upwards from zero. It notifies me every 400m completed.

I notice pretty early on that Mr (you should really not be wearing) tanga briefs in the right hand lane was using me as a speed benchmark. Mr Tanga had a large beer belly so I was quite simply not going to allow this!! He would wait for me to arrive and then then set off at the same time. So I upped the pace and kept well ahead of him. He would then stop and mess about for a bit, then wait for me to arrive and off we go again. This went on for a wee while and I kept well ahead of him every time (despite the fact that he also unveiled the ability to tumble turn!)

Then I suddenly noticed my (rather overweight) Adidas shorts in the left hand lane had joined the party, and was swimming adjacent to me keeping pace. Well that wonโ€™t do!! So I upped the pace even more, to keep ahead of him also. Mr Adidas is a bit faster than Mr Tanaga, so he makes me work harder. However I got a lead out on him... but when i got a bit too far ahead he would stop right in the middle of the length and float around for a bit like he had something else to do, go to the end, wait for me to get back round then off we go again! This went on for a while so the accidental fartlek continued.. I barely noticed Mr (you should really not be wearing) tanga briefs get out and leave! ๐Ÿคฃ

Still, I now have unfinished business in the left hand lane and Mr Adidas shorts is getting sick of me beating him, so he stops to put on the swim fins! ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ™„

He waits for me to get back round again.. giving me enough time to formulate a plan. I have now covered 1600m and I have time for another 400m.

As I turn, he sets off with fins on... and BOOM! I unveil my flat out sprint pace... and he eats my dust! Once I realised it would be easier than I thought to stay ahead, I slowed a touch but kept the effort up. I almost got a whole lap out on him.... when guess what happened next...

Just as I was drawing level with his feet to lap him.. he stopped right in the middle of the lane and floated about like he had something else to do ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ™„

So I completed my 400m and went to work! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

#dollypartonchallenge

I decided to jump on the bandwagon! (Hereโ€™s the background if you donโ€™t know what Iโ€™m talking about! https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/celebs/a30656842/dolly-parton-challenge-linkedin-facebook-instagram-twitter-meme-explained/)

I have never even looked at Tinder, never mind joined it... I really struggled to find anything even remotely appropriate for that one!

Tales from the swimming pool continued

I decided to pop to the pool this afternoon.

I had set my watch to 2000m. It counts my laps for me and vibrates when Iโ€™m done, so I donโ€™t have to think about it once I start swimming.

I decided to go a touch faster today: tempo effort rather than easy. Iโ€™m 300m or so into the 2000m when the guy in the next lane waits for me to turn then sets off just ahead of me. Deliberate or not, thatโ€™s like a red flag to me! ๐Ÿ˜ก

And... he was wearing Bermuda shorts!

Mr Bermuda shorts wasnโ€™t hanging around, and after a couple of laps he started to pull ahead of me. Gradually teasing out a lead he eventually managed to get almost a lap ahead of me.

Bermuda shorts do NOT Beat me!๐Ÿ˜ก๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

So I stuck at it, hard effort but at a pace I knew was sustainable for me tucked my head in and kept going. This would take a while to catch him back again.

As I hoped, all my distance swim training started to pay off and gradually his feet began to get closer again. I have no idea if Mr Bermuda shorts knew all this was going on behind him, it seemed like aaaaages and lots of laps before I managed to get level with his feet. It took another 4-5 laps of swimming side by side to actually get a head in front of him.

Cleary Mr Bermuda shorts now knows exactly what Iโ€™m up to! ๐Ÿคฃ

Frankly, it felt like once that once I got ahead, it became easy. Or perhaps itโ€™s just that Iโ€™m much more motivated when Iโ€™m chasing rather than leading. Either that or Mr Bermuda shorts was starting to flag - this had been going on for quite some distance!

I eventually got a half lap in front, then.. BOOM! He got out and went home!๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿค” You canโ€™t go Mr Bermuda shorts, Iโ€™m not done yet and Iโ€™m having a lot of fun here! ๐Ÿ˜†

With 600m still to go, what a let down!

Still, I managed to shave 7 mins off the time it took me to swim 2000m earlier in the week!! Thatโ€™s a significant chunk of time for a swim!

Thank you for the motivation Mr Bermuda shorts, you can come again!๐Ÿคฃ

Picture is a small part of my vast swim hat selection! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž

How do I look? Starting to look old I think. ๐Ÿ˜ข

I have always firmly and wholly believed age is just a number but the lines on my face are telling me different these days.

[01/23/20]   4th March. Iโ€™m hoping I start to get some answers to this darned foot issue on that date.

Swim this morning before work and the pool was deserted! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

2.5km (100 lengths) done ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I got talking to a lovely lady afterwards who I had been playing unofficial lap tag with during my swim: she was in the next lane and I wasnโ€™t really paying much attention at first. Towards the end of my swim I started to notice her because she put some swim fins on. When she forgot to kick and use them properly, I was able to overtake her.. then she would remember about her legs & take off like a rocket! This went on for 30 laps or so! ๐Ÿคฃ

So I spoke to her at the end. She said she was the swimmer for a team at challenge Wanaka in a few weeks, had never done open water swimming before - did I have any tips?!
๐Ÿคฏ

Express crash course from sitting on the side of the pool!! She then said she was hoping to do the swim inside 60 mins. I assured her she would do that easily, from what I had seen of her today!

I hope I bump into her again so I can find out how she did!!

So apparently an 800m swim can be squashed into a 60 min lunch break. ๐Ÿค”

I was sooooo tempted to try and make it 1000m but it would have made me late back.

Time was from walking out the door, to driving across town to the pool, getting changed etc, swim, get changed again, drive back to work and walk back in the door ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

I will now have to assess whether it was all actually worth it!!

How to make was was likely to be a short swim harder? Use paddles!

Sooo, I havenโ€™t ridden my bike since the 15 December, due to the nerve pain in my left foot/ leg.

Doc has been experimenting with meds doses to try and get the pain under control... today is not the first time I have tried this.

All other times it has been an Immediate NOPE! But today, granted I only pedalled for 30-60 seconds but it seemed ok.

Nerve pain; a physio view

I went to see Joel my physio today about this nerve pain and he threw a completely different suggestion at me which has really got me thinking

Decided BUGGER IT!

Despite the fact that I still have a fat leg and a thin (almost 18 months on!) I have decided I no longer care what it looks like or what others think and Iโ€™m going to wear my leggings again anyway!

It looks like one leg is slightly closer to the camera than the other.. but it isnโ€™t!

Results from the nerve test...

Almost the last one out tonight!

Decided to do a threshold set today: 10x100m.
All 10 were within 4 seconds of each other. Pretty impressed with that. Maybe I now need to add another 5 sets. ๐Ÿค”

Sat in the chilly bin before I left.. to try and calm this calf down!

Swim the distance virtual challenge goal coming on nicely!

I entered the 20,000m challenge for January and Iโ€™m already half way there! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

On a mission- to tell the stories of athletes with a TKR who returned to sport! A knee replacement is NOT a life sentence!

Iโ€™m starting recording episodes next week with my first two volunteers ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜

If you are someone with a #kneereplacement or #totalkneereplacement and you have returned to the sport you took part in prior to your op, I need to hear from you!!

Itโ€™s about time we told the world that a #TKR ENABLES you to get your life back... all of it!

So this is what happens when the increase in pain meds means no alcohol for me... instead I end up being the involuntary sober driver ๐Ÿ˜’

I broke my โ€˜Iโ€™m never driving his car againโ€™ pledge on the promise he kept his trap shut from the start to the end of the journey! Iโ€™m pleased to say he succeeded! ๐Ÿ™„

My new fitness challenge: ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

Since I am now exclusively confined to swimming until I see a neurosurgeon and get some answers for this stupid nerve pain, I need a new challenge since Wanaka is now out. ๐Ÿ˜ข

So I am to swim 20,000m during January. ๐Ÿ˜

I was tempted to enter the 25km, but I wanted to start somewhere I knew was achievable. 800 lengths ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
