“Will I still be able to move my face?”

Yes. And that’s an important part of the conversation.

It’s one of the questions I’m often asked about anti-wrinkle treatment. There can be a worry that having treatment means losing expression or not looking like yourself.

But treatment doesn’t have to mean removing every bit of movement.

Anti-wrinkle treatment works by temporarily reducing the activity of selected facial muscles. How we approach that depends on your natural movement, the area being treated, and what you’d like from your treatment.

For me, it’s not about treating every line or removing every expression.

It’s about looking at your face, how it moves, what you’d like to soften, and what you’d still like to see when you smile, laugh or raise your eyebrows.

A few days out of clinic, but very much still thinking about faces. 😄

I’ve just spent a few days in Queenstown at the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine Conference, which this year also marked the Society’s 25th anniversary.

Conferences like this are always a good reminder of how much this field continues to evolve. There were conversations around facial anatomy, skin health, treatment planning, regenerative medicine and different approaches to cosmetic medicine — plenty to listen to, question and think about.

And just as importantly, it’s always such a good chance to catch up with familiar faces in the industry. When you spend most of your working week tucked away in your own clinic, having a few days surrounded by colleagues is pretty special.

Even after more than 10 years working in cosmetic medicine, I don’t think you ever get to a point where you should stop learning. New ideas are useful, but so is looking critically at what we already do and asking whether there’s a better or more considered way to do it.

I’ve come home with a full notebook, some great conversations behind me, and a few things I want to explore further.

For me, dermal filler isn’t about changing a face or chasing a particular look. It’s about understanding what you’ve noticed, looking at your face as a whole, and deciding whether treatment is appropriate in the first place.

Sometimes that means a small, considered treatment. Sometimes it means looking at another option. And sometimes it means deciding not to treat at all.
