When I stand at dawn it is not because I seek to glorify war or to show my support for the politicians who send our armed forces into conflict zones. I support our troops, people who serve our nations, who do their jobs with honour and bravery.

To me ANZAC day is the remembering of one of our military failures. Where our nations sent thousands of young people to their deaths after a series of strategic and politcal mistakes. The sacrifices that those individuals and families made were no less valiant for that fact.

I woke up this morning counting my lucky stars that my darling, a man who is both a loving individual and veteran, is still alive and has a relatively clean conscience. It is the local people in the areas of conflict, and our veterans and their families that feel and see the scars of war. I pray that any conflict that our armed forces engage in, in the future, are not as futile as our battle at ANZAC cove. That as a nation we value our currently serving troops, and do not only honour the dead. That we provide support services for all veterans, particularly those that struggle to return to civilian life when they are forced or choose to do so.

To all veterans young and old, thank you for your service.

Hello beautiful people. I haven't been posting much because I've been getting booked too far in advance when I do. My next available booking is in the second week of February, but I do have one booking available in January, that I will auction off as a fundraiser for a charity road trip that my mother in law is doing (link in the comments). The highest bid commented below on the 22nd of December will be given a voucher for a new set of dreadlocks made purely with their own hair, full head or partial. A great treat for yourself or a loved one this festive season.

Bidding starts $350

Love this viking look!

Introducing the newest member of our household, Layla Fay Hickford-Page. She was born on the 28th of July and was 4065g (8 pounds 15 oz).

My apologies for not answering many enquiries at the moment, we are soaking up that oh-too-short newborn stage. Dreadlocks by Erica will be up and running for maintenance bookings in a couple of months.

Hello beautiful rope heads! I'm fully booked until my maternity leave starts in a couple of weeks, and will be catching up on my messages as I can. Dreadlocks by Erica will be back up and running once baby is here, until then, stay awesome ✌️

[03/23/20]   Hi Rope Heads. A few of you are concerned about how to care for your locs, especially those with new dreadlings.

Remember that the most important things you need to do for dreads is to keep them clean, and to prevent them from joining together at the base. If you don't have any suitable shampoo, try using baking soda and vinegar. Into a cup dissolve a few tablespoons of baking soda into half a cup of warm water. Pour this over your scalp and let it sit for a few minutes (I recommend doing this bit in the shower, but you do you). Mix half a cup of apple cider or white vinegar with warm water, then pour over your scalp. Let this sit for a few minutes before rinsing out. You may hear a fizzing sound, this is the acid/alkaline neutralising, and is totally normal. The vinegar smell will dissipate as your hair dries.

To separate your dreads, feel around the base of each of your dreadlocks where they are sectioned on your scalp. Check to see that there are no hairs trying to join two or more locs together. If you find any, snap the hairs in order to keep the locs separate from each other. If you find the two or more dreads have joined up, this is called a congo. Don't panic, pull them apart as best you can, and I will be able to help you once the lockdown is over.

Kia kaha, look after each other, stay well x

[06/01/19]   Hello Dread lovers

I will not be answering messages for a few days. Thank you for your understanding, I have not forgotten about you all, and will be back from next week onwards.

On Wednesday I had an anaphylactic reaction to a combination of food and exercise. My 4 year old son called the ambulance for me. Teach your kids how to do that, how to type the emergency services number for the country that you live in, and your address. That is important. But this post is about the cost of access to Epi pens in New Zealand, and other countries that do not include them in their relevant subsidised medicines act.

I have known that I have severe allergic reactions for awhile now This is only the second time that I have required adrenaline and hospitalisation for them, so I thought that I could get away without carrying an Epi-pen, the life saving adrenaline administering device that costs $200 nzd, which expires after one year, sometimes less. I, like many of my friends, have kids. Whenever one of them would need food, clothes, lessons, birthday presents etc, they have always been my priority over a $200 device that I may or may not need. I have learned my lesson the hard way and will order one tomorrow. Because I can afford to. In my case, an ambulance got to me in time, then I was in hospital during the secondary reaction. I'm ok now, but it was a close call and I got lucky.

There are lots of people, many of them children, with life threatening allergies here in New Zealand, and overseas, that don't have the privilege of having that sort of spare money. People are literally dying, because they are chosing food, power, rent, and other basic neccessities, over an Epi-pen. So if you are still reading, please share this information, because some people don't know that they cost that much. If you ever see something petitioning your government for the subsidy of these medicines, please sign it. If you have a charitable heart and spare money, please donate to NGOs that give them to people who can't afford them. Thanks, I love you all, and I'm glad to still be here to write this. I will provide some links tomorrow when I have the energy to look them up.

A stunning dreadlock makeover! The photo really doesn't do this set justice, the synthetic extensions are a deep burgundy shade, and look so lush on this beautiful mama.
