This morning before our mobility class we had our official weigh in. I was sooo excited to have reached my personal goal.

I have recently met with Jackie Small for a nutrition consult...piecing together all of the information I have been learning through the free nutrition seminars.

A desire to gain mobility and relieve some day to day niggles in my body saw me booking a free consult with Tony a year ago. I had checked out all the gyms in Palmerston North and got a good feeling from the way SmallWONDERS described themselves on their website.
From the moment I stepped into the space Tony and Jackie have created with SmallWONDERS I could tell this was the gym for me. The words which come to mind when I think of SW are authentic, fun, knowledgeable, freedom, inclusive, and inspiring. Tony and Jackie have a wealth of knowledge in a number of different areas, and genuinely want to help people in their quest for self-improvement no matter what this path may be.
Since joining SmallWONDERS I am feeling more mobile, and those day to day niggles are reduced or resolved. I'm gaining strength and confidence, and am just now starting to focus on weight loss. While these are all important, one of the biggest pluses for me is feeling happy to hit the gym after a busy workday in a space which I feel comfortable in. My job involves intense interaction with people, so not having to contend with crowds for equipment or workout space is a breath of fresh air. Other members greet you with a smile, and the overall vibe is very positive.

I love watching sports documentaries or any show that makes people push themselves beyond their boundaries. We particularly like watching any cycling documentaries - at the moment we are currently hooked on โThe Impossible Routeโ. This show is created by an โaverage man doing above average things - a family man who likes to ride bikesโ. Typically he brings along some ex professional bike riders as support. The premise of each series is to take an impossible route (such as riding Death Valley in America) which has never been done before, map it out and ride it. Some absolutely epic bike riding!
Another show that we love is Naked and Afraid - each episode chronicles the lives of two survivalists (1 man/1woman) who are given the task of surviving a stay in the wilderness for 21 days - with no items except one thing they are allowed to bring. These places are anywhere from the jungles of Bolivia to the African plains. And the last one I personally really enjoy is the SAS - the brutality of what they put the contenstants through and the way in which you watch peopleโs mental abiltiy to survive fascinates me.
So what is it about all of these shows? Why can I sit for an hour and watch 3 cyclists ride over 5 days through all sorts of conditions and climates? What is it about SAS and Naked and Afraid that particularly hooks me?
Ultimately - itโs about the ability to survive and how far we can push our bodies and minds. How far can we go? Just when we think we have nothing left, which of our character traits come to the forefront? Which sides of our personality are our weaknesses? In order to survive, which of these traits ultimately assist us? Watch Naked and Afraid at Day 18, when they have had nothing to eat , very little water, no sleep and personality clashes. Or in worse case serionas - your partner has left and you have been on your own the entire time. What happens to us and how do we mentally push through it. What do we draw on (one person sang hymns for 17 days, one created a coconut person). When the bike riders run out of water, food and energy, and they still have 400 km to go, riding through terrible conditions and terraine. What keeps them pedalling?
The idea of pushing ourselves to our limits and doing something epic really resonates. How often do we actually ask ourselves how much further? What can my body actually do if I actually pushed it to its limits? What are my limits? How do I know? And what will it take to push me there? But more than anything what stops us doing something epic?

Booking a session with a trainer where they start to question us, push us that little bit more, make us feel uncomfortable. Getting a new programme, trying new movements in the gym put us all in an uncomfortable space. But when was the last time you actually asked yourself how far can you push yourself before your mental capacity breaks down? Do you know what that is? What would you be capable of? What personality traits would kick in? What would take over?
One of the bike riders spoke about the meditative zone and how putting themselves in the present moment gets him through (he also talks about the past/present/future self- the past self had decided that he was more than capable of doing this epic ride, the present self is regretting every minute but the future self knows the feeling that of achievement that will come at the end). Naked and Afraid contestents talk about what inspires them to keep going (usually another person or something traumatic that they have experienced in the past).
We are so much more capable of what we think we are. As humans we can survive through all sorts of conditions, through all sorts of struggles. The important thing is that we have a toolbox of strategies to help us cope, to help us get to that next level, to push ourselves to the next stage. We have the mental capabilities to adapt and change, and know which tools to pull on. We need to read, think, talk with people, attend classes, learn from each other, ask the right questions, self improve, seek help (your coaches can help with so much of this), get inspired and motivated, feel as one with ourselves, know who we are and what gets our passion alight - all of these things help us build this toolbox.
So next time you feel a little uncomfortable ask yourself - what is something epic that I can achieve whether it be today, tomorrow or in the near future. Where will it take me? Who do I need by my side? What would my past/present/future self look like? How can I visualize that? And what really sets me alight - makes my eyes sparkle, my brain fire, my energy surge?
