We are excited to welcome Abbey Stratton officially (on social media😀) to our team of Physiotherapists!
.
Abbey was brought up on a hill country farm east of Taihape. Before graduating with a Bachelor of Health Science (Physiotherapy) from Auckland University of Technology in 2021, Abbey boarded at Feilding High School and then spent a year as a teaching assistant/coach at Llandovery College, Wales. She toured South Africa with the college, coaching netball and hockey as well as travelling around much of the UK and Europe.
.
During her time at AUT, Abbey was involved with numerous sporting events as well as working with Northcote Rugby Club and more recently Te Kawau Rugby Club. As part of her training, she has spent time in private, medical and acute stroke based settings within the Whanganui DHB. Abbey is particularly interested in the musculoskeletal field with a passion for sports-related injuries and rehabilitation, inspired by sustaining sports injuries herself.
.
Abbey is looking forward to being closer to home and in her spare time, enjoys being with family and friends, water skiing, mountain biking and helping out on the farm.
Farewell Johann! On Friday we said farewell to Johann as he heads off to join the DHB - we wish you all the best in your next endeavour Johann!
Congratulations Johann Serfontein!

.
Read on to learn more about Rachelle:

Rachelle graduated from the University of Stellenbosch,South Africa in 2012 completing her compulsory year of government service in rural North-Eastern South Africa. Rachelle has a passion for rehabilitating patients from all walks of life across the physiotherapy spectrum.

Her next year was spent in Cardiothoracic and General ICU. In 2015 Rachelle moved over to Musculoskeletal Rehab and completed her certificate in Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy. Over the next four years Rachelle enjoyed working with Elite Tri-Athletes and long-distance runners to the respiratory management of those acute chest infections, working within a multi-disciplinary practice. Rachelle was recruited to New Zealand and moved over in January 2019 with her husband, her first job over here being at a local Palmerston North Hand Therapy Clinic. However the desire to treat all injuries, head-to-toe, led Rachelle to joining us at RPC in February 2020.

Her passion for returning patients to previous level of function and her interest in rehabilitation led Rachelle to completing her 500hour Integral Yoga Teacher Training in 2017.

In her spare time Rachelle enjoys horse-riding, walking and yoga.
We're profiling our Physiotherapists this week so you can learn more about who they are and how they can help you during lockdown! Up next is:

Keegan says "Sudden changes in activity levels, such as returning to sports post lockdown or an increase in activity during lockdown, can also increase or provoke injury symptoms. This is where Telehealth consultations can help with education, guidance through exercises and activity load management to help ensure you keep progressing through your injuries".

Introducing the newest member of our Physiotherapy team - Johann Serfontein! Here's his thoughts about the value of phone and video consults (Telehealth) during this lockdown:

"While Telehealth limits physical contact between patients and therapists, it creates a functional platform for your therapist to advise you on self-management of your condition and provide you with home exercises to assist in the alleviation of your symptoms and return to full function".
.
.
.
Read on to find out more about Johann:

Johann graduated in 2003 from the University of Pretoria, South Africa on a military bursary. In 2005, he started work in private practice, which included work for the North West University PUK Rugby Institute and the Leopards Rugby Union Amateur team in the 2006 and 2007 Currie Cup seasons. In 2006 he completed a Master’s Degree in Education at the North West University.

He relocated to Johannesburg in 2008, establishing his own practice and started working for Platinum Stars Football Club in the Premier Soccer League. In 2009, he obtained his PhD with a thesis on the creation of a prediction model for youth soccer injuries. He served as referee physiotherapist in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup. In 2011, he started work at the Morningside Sports Medicine Centre and Bidvest Wits Football Club in the Premier Soccer League.

Johann finished work at Bidvest Wits FC in 2013 and also completed his Masters’ Degree in Business Leadership. In 2016, Johann stepped back from full time Physiotherapy to focus on developing his management and leadership skills, while still locuming part time. He worked as a healthcare consultant until emigrating to New Zealand and joining the team at Physio Rehab Centre in June 2021.

He is currently still an external lecturer in the University of Stellenbosch Business School MBA programme and published an award winning novel in 2018, under the pseudonym Jean Cerfontaine. Johann enjoys hiking, travelling, antiquing and is currently busy with his second novel.
