💜 Sparsh Self-Care Series: Feeling tight through your lower back?

Lower-back tension can build up for many reasons, including long periods of sitting, lifting, repetitive movement, exercise or simply not moving enough throughout the day. Gentle stretching and regular movement can sometimes help the area feel more comfortable.

Try:
• A gentle forward fold or reaching towards your toes, only as far as feels comfortable
• Stretching your hamstrings and glutes, which can influence how the hips and lower back move
• Getting up regularly if you sit for long periods
• Walking to keep the spine and surrounding muscles moving
• Gentle strengthening for the core, hips and glutes
• Massage to help address muscular tension around the lower back, hips and surrounding areas

The important word is gentle. You don’t need to actually touch your toes, and stretching shouldn’t feel sharp or painful.

Lower-back discomfort can have many causes, so if pain is persistent, worsening, travels down the leg, or is accompanied by numbness or weakness, it’s best to seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional.

How often should you have a massage? There isn’t one schedule that suits everyone. How often you may benefit from massage can depend on things like:

• Whether you’re managing a specific area of tension
• How physically demanding your work is
• Your training or activity levels
• How quickly tension tends to return
• Whether your goal is recovery, relaxation or general maintenance
• How your body responds after treatment

Someone dealing with a recurring issue may benefit from appointments closer together for a period of time, while someone using massage mainly for relaxation or general wellbeing may prefer more occasional sessions.

It’s also worth remembering that massage works best as part of a bigger picture. Regular movement, stretching, strength, good sleep and recovery habits can all help support how your body feels between appointments.

At Sparsh, there’s no one-size-fits-all treatment schedule. Your therapist can help you work out what makes sense for your body, lifestyle and goals.

Meet Danny, one of Sparsh’s massage therapists, with a background in Sport, Health & Human Performance and experience working alongside high-level sports teams and athletes.

His knowledge extends well beyond athletes. Danny specialises in Sports and Therapeutic Massage, working with people experiencing muscular tension, physical discomfort or simply wanting better support around an active lifestyle.

One important thing to understand about muscle tension is that it is not always caused by exercise alone. Repetitive movement, long periods in one position, work demands and changes in training can all contribute to how the body feels.

That’s why Danny looks at more than just the sore spot. He considers movement patterns, activity levels, lifestyle and individual goals before adapting the treatment. Massage can then be used as one part of a broader approach to helping the body recover, move more comfortably and manage ongoing muscular tension.

For a commercial photographer, long days mean carrying heavy equipment, standing for hours, bending, reaching and working in awkward positions to get the right shot. That can take a toll on the body over time.

Regular massage has become part of this client's routine, helping her feel more comfortable and better able to keep doing the work without pain.

A desk job may not feel physically demanding, but sitting for long periods can still place stress on the body.

When we stay in one position for hours, the muscles around the neck, shoulders, upper back and hips can become tight or fatigued. Add in screen time, poor posture and not enough movement, and it’s easy to see why so many people finish the day feeling stiff.

A few simple habits can help:
• Get up and move every 30–60 minutes
• Gently roll your shoulders and stretch your neck
• Keep your screen at eye level where possible
• Make sure your feet are supported and your chair is comfortable
• Add regular walking or movement into your day
• Consider massage if tension keeps building up

Massage can help give overworked muscles some attention, particularly when combined with regular movement and good workstation habits.

At Sparsh, treatments can be tailored around where you’re feeling tension, your daily routine and how your body is responding.

Sometimes the most effective treatments are the ones tailored to exactly what your body needs that day.

At Sparsh, each session is adapted to the individual rather than following the same routine every time. From pressure to focus areas, the treatment is shaped around how your body is feeling and what you want to get from your appointment.

Why does your Sparsh therapist ask so many questions before your massage? Because two people can walk in saying, “My back is sore”, and need completely different approaches.

At your first Sparsh appointment, your therapist takes time to understand things like: What are you feeling? What activities do you do? Where are you experiencing discomfort? What would you like to achieve from your treatment?

That information helps shape a massage around you, rather than simply putting everyone through the same treatment.

It’s also important to tell your therapist about your health history, as certain health conditions may affect whether massage or particular techniques are appropriate.

What exactly is myofascial release? We talk about muscles a lot, but there’s another part of the picture: fascia. Fascia is connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles and other structures throughout the body.

Myofascial release uses hands-on techniques to work with areas of tightness and restriction in these tissues. It can form part of a wider personalised massage treatment rather than every session following exactly the same routine.

Our Sparsh’s therapist, Evelyn, has training and experience in myofascial release alongside physiotherapy, rehabilitation and therapeutic massage. Book your appointment with her today.
