MRRN Successfully Airlifts Mother and Twin Babies to Modilon General Hospital

Madang, Papua New Guinea – 22 January 2026 – A mother and her twin babies from Sanavit Village, Ward 18, were successfully airlifted to Modilon General Hospital at approximately 11:20 am following a maternal and neonatal emergency. The patients are currently in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical care.

The emergency medical evacuation was coordinated by the Madang Rapid Response Network (MRRN) under the leadership of Founder and Director John Newtown Ariku and Director Daniel Martin. Operational support was provided by Public Relations Officer Stanley Philipae, MEDEVAC Officer Leslie Wali, and Operations Coordinator Tony Dibul.

Medical reception and hospital coordination were facilitated by Mr Johnmark Jeremiah, Executive Manager of Modilon General Hospital, ensuring the patients were promptly received and attended to upon arrival.

The operation was made possible through the collaborative support of Hon. Dul Bal, President of Ambenob LLG, Heli-Niugini Ltd, Madang Provincial Health Authority (MaPHA), local community members, and all MRRN+ members and administrative controllers who contributed to the successful coordination and ex*****on of the mission.

This operation marks MRRN’s fourth medical evacuation, with one conducted in 2025 and two earlier in 2026. These missions reflect MRRN’s continued commitment to providing emergency response services across Madang Province, particularly in hard-to-reach and remote communities. Previous operations have included maternal and neonatal evacuations, road traffic accident responses, and disaster-related interventions during floods and landslides.

Images from the operation show MRRN leadership and personnel coordinating the evacuation, highlighting the teamwork and cooperation between emergency responders and health authorities.

MRRN will continue to monitor the patients’ progress and provide updates as appropriate.

My First Encounter with Godawan – Papa Graun blo Madang

Hi, my name is SaiRah, and this is the story of the first time I saw a Papa Graun called Godawan in Madang. I am not sure if I spell the name correctly, but that is the name everyone uses when telling this story. Just like Bombongara in Morobe (Finschhafen), this is Godawan of Madang.

It was a calm, cozy afternoon back in 2023. At the time, I had decided to spend my weekend at home. Our family house was located along Regina Avenue, opposite Raun Wara, near Kalibobo Lighthouse.

That night, we planned to go night diving at the reef behind the famous Madang Resort. It was around 11:00 pm when we headed out. The group included my uncle Morobe, my brother friend Elizah Kuarim, and other two brothers, Tain Menz and Gideon

We entered the water near Peter Barta’s area and began diving toward Madang Resort. After some time, Tain Menz, Gideon, and I became cold, so we decided to return to the reef and start a small fire to warm ourselves. Meanwhile, Uncle Morobe and Elizah continued diving all the way toward the resort.

Suddenly, Gideon shouted,
“SaiRah, come up and see! There’s a huge snake, and the sea is lighting up!”

At first, I brushed it off. I thought it was just the moonlight reflecting on the waves, making the water glow as it broke on the reef. But Gideon kept calling me, insisting that I come and stand on a large stone on the reef and look for myself.

So I went up.

The moment I looked out, my jaw dropped. I was completely speechless. I had never seen anything like it in my life.

There, moving slowly through the water, was a giant snake, far bigger than the trunk of a coconut tree. Its tail stretched back toward Kalibobo Lighthouse, while its head had already passed far beyond where we were standing, at least 50 meters offshore.

The sea around it glowed, reflecting off its massive scales as it moved. The water lit up with every motion.

The three of us panicked and ran toward Madang Resort, shouting for Uncle Morobe and Elizah. As we ran, people from behind us, others who had also seen it, joined us and stood watching. Dogs nearby barked nonstop.

When Uncle Morobe and Elizah finally came ashore, all of us stood there in silence, watching the creature glide through the water. Slowly, it moved between Madang town and Karanget Island. We watched until its massive form disappeared around the island.

We returned home around 2:00 am, lit a big fire, and cooked the fish we had caught. We told no one about what we saw. We knew that if our father heard this story, he would probably stop us from night diving on the reef altogether.

The following night, we went out again, this time diving from Kalibobo Lighthouse toward Country Club, and that became our regular weekend routine.

There is no moral to this story.

This is simply the first time I saw Godawan, Papa Graun blo Madang.

K5.00 per hour is unacceptable. It must be K20.00 per hour. PNG is one of the richest Black nations on earth 🌍 — are we really serious with K5.00 an hour? K5.00 × 80 hours over 10 working days equals K400 per fortnight.

With today’s high cost of living, high food prices, and expensive accommodation, no ordinary citizen can survive on this amount. This wage is not just inadequate — it is an insult to hardworking Papua New Guineans.

As politicians and decision-makers, put yourselves in the shoes of a labourer earning K5.00 per hour. Ask yourselves honestly: can you live on K400 a fortnight? The answer is clearly no. This rate is ridiculous, unacceptable, and must be revised immediately.

The government must act on the fundamentals:
(a) Increase the minimum wage to a realistic and humane level.
(b) Inject more funding into NHC to build large-scale, affordable rental housing.
(c) Direct the Department of Lands to negotiate with customary landowners and identify land for housing development. Ensure affordable rentals such as:
1-bedroom unit: K25 per month
2-bedroom unit: K45 per month
3-bedroom unit: K65 per month

(d) Invest heavily in agriculture and livestock to lower food prices.
(e) Reduce imports and increase exports to strengthen the economy and create jobs.

The PNG Government must get the basics right. Stop making a mockery of your own people. Citizens deserve dignity, fairness, and a living wage — not empty promises.

Liklik Tingting tasol. Yupla yet skelim lo hap💯👀🙏🇵🇬
