MP Surrenders Son to Police Over Alleged Murder

PNG Online News | Tue. June 9, 2026

POLICE in Wewak are investigating the death of a man who allegedly succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent attack in the early hours of last Saturday.

East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Christopher Tamari confirmed that the deceased, identified as Richmond Aaron, was seriously wounded during the incident and was rushed to Boram Provincial Hospital. He later died on Sunday while undergoing medical treatment.

Following Aaron’s death, relatives lodged a formal complaint with police and identified several suspects allegedly involved in the attack. Among those named was the son of Wewak MP Hon. Stanley Samban.

Superintendent Tamari said MP Samban informed police that his son was involved in the incident and assured authorities that he would personally surrender him for investigation and any charges that may follow.

The MP subsequently travelled to Wewak and facilitated the surrender of his son and other suspects to police.

According to preliminary police reports, Aaron was a cousin of the suspect. Police allege that he was discovered inside the suspect’s bedroom at a family residence in Kreer Valley, Wewak, engaged in sexual in*******se with the suspect’s sister, who was also Aaron’s cousin. The confrontation that followed allegedly escalated into a violent assault that left Aaron critically injured.

Speaking during the surrender, MP Samban said he would not use his position to shield his son from the law.

“No one is above the law and I will not protect my son using my position. I am not condoning the matter. Law is for everyone, and anyone who breaches laws must be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

Superintendent Tamari commended the MP’s actions, describing him as “a true leader who takes law and order seriously.”

He said the voluntary surrender saved police significant time and resources that would otherwise have been required to locate and apprehend the suspects.

Police investigations are continuing, and authorities are preparing to lay charges against those allegedly involved in the incident.

All allegations remain under investigation, and those accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
