Hey everyone — I know a lot of you have been waiting for this, so here it is.✨️📣
Disclaimer: This is not to tarnish any organization. I’m simply sharing my personal experience leasing with PNG’s largest shopping mall.
For the past few years, I’ve been doing casual leasing at Vision City Mall. But as of 2026, I’ve made the decision to step away completely — no more pop-ups, no more presence there. Some of you may have already noticed, and this is why.
From the very beginning, there were limitations. During my application, I clearly outlined my brand, Alora, as a beauty and fashion business. However, I was restricted from selling most of my products and was only allowed to sell perfumes.
The explanation I received was that preference had already been given to internal tenants selling similar products. But the reality is — no one offers exactly what I do, and that’s what makes my brand unique. Still, I chose to respect their decision and worked within those limitations for years.
Over time, there were also many promises made about securing a proper space. I was told repeatedly that something was being arranged, but whenever I tried to follow up or meet with management, there was always a lack of availability or communication.
As time went on, I began to realize that I was operating in an environment where favoritism played a role — where being a Papua New Guinean in business didn’t necessarily guarantee equal opportunity.
That realization was difficult to accept.
What stood out even more was seeing newer businesses, some with only a short time doing pop-ups, being offered permanent shop spaces — while I, after years of consistency and presence, was not given the same opportunity. That made it clear to me where I stood.
After years of navigating this, I made a decision in 2025: I would no longer invest my time or energy into a space that does not support or uplift local SMEs like mine.
Walking away wasn’t easy — but it was necessary.
Today, Alora is growing in spaces that genuinely welcome and support us.
A big thank you to Brian Bell for believing in my brand and giving me room to expand, to Waterfront for giving me my very first opportunity, and to Stop & Shop Waigani Central for showing me that the right opportunities do exist.
This chapter is closed — and I’m moving forward with clarity, purpose, and growth.
