Marape’s Japan Visit Celebrated, but Questions Remain on Concrete Benefits for PNG

Prime Minister James Marape has recently concluded a landmark visit to Japan, commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations between Papua New Guinea and Japan. The visit included high-level talks in Osaka and Tokyo, highlighting cooperation in trade, investment, fisheries, energy, education, and infrastructure.

While the celebrations focus on the strong historical partnership and promises of future collaboration, it is important to consider how much of this will result in real, measurable benefits for Papua New Guineans. Several key agreements and proposals were made, including plans for upgrading Tokua Airport and a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to deepen economic ties.

However, many details on how these initiatives will directly impact communities remain unclear. The visit outlined ambitious goals, but it is yet to be seen how effectively these commitments will translate into tangible improvements for people across PNG.

There is concern that some of the financial commitments and increased foreign investments could add to Papua New Guinea’s existing debt burden. This raises questions about how sustainable these projects are and whether safeguards are in place to protect national interests.

Rapid development may also carry risks for the environment and traditional landowners. Without clear policies and transparent consultation, important ecological areas and customary land rights could be overlooked.

As Papua New Guinea moves forward with strengthening ties to Japan, it will be crucial for the government to ensure transparency in agreements, maintain accountability, and prioritize the welfare of its citizens.

Prime Minister James Marape has successfully concluded a high-level visit to Japan, marking a milestone in Papua New Guinea–Japan relations as both nations celebrate 50 years of diplomatic partnership.

The Post Courier needs better journalists. They only write about unimportant family stuff. They use shocking words to get people's attention. This makes us worry about their fairness and honesty.

This article isn't that important. It should be in the middle pages. We need the journalists to do real investigations instead. There are important stories they're missing. They shouldn't just sit in their office and write about family problems. They should go out and find real news.

We haven't seen the Post Courier do any big investigations yet. They only care about making money by printing shocking stories on the front page. They're a very bad newspaper company.

Accused of sorcery and have fallen victim to violence, those unfortunate people who suffer from this adverse circumstances were mostly women, particularly mothers. Many went on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. What a sad scenario🥺😞
Where is our Law enforcements??

This is a Response Paper from me in relation to the The “Sorcery Accusation – Related Violence in Enga Province” by Philip Gibbs, William Kipongi, Anton Lutz, Ibolya Losoncz, Miranda Forsyth and Fiona Hukula.

Their book address problems attached to the cultural constructed ideas of witchcraft practice in Enga which lead to violence and killings. Their research take a unique perspective when analyzing how this belief of sorcery portrays a big role of taking away innocent lives.

From their research, most women are the victims. Nearly all of these women were uneducated, illiterates, and aged 41 to 60. The research identify that in “all the cases of accusation that led to the violence, there was a known incident that started the accusation”. Sorcery accusations often arise in response to an unexpected death or illness in a community. Sometimes due to misfortune specifically
like a student failing from school, and the parents accuse someone for cursing the student from failing from school.

What stood out to me most about this scenario of their research is that most women are the victims for the reason that they are physically weak in a sense that they cannot fight back men, many of them are uneducated and illiterates. This is gender based violence and a common problem affecting the lives of so many innocent individuals and communities.

Sorcery, likewise recognized as Sanguma, is a do or die matter in Papua New Guinea (PNG) especially in the highlands region. Sorcery assassinations in PNG are all too popular. These homicides not often bring about the information to the police and the law enforcement protection is unreliable. The accusers do the torture and killings secretly and the information kept confidential where nobody knows.

Ideals in sorcery or black magic is extremely rooted and extensively stretch out in distinctive systems throughout PNG, not only in remote areas, but also in urban areas. I think the Law enforcements are a bit weak, therefore issues are arising. If they play their duty well, there might be reduction in this issue.
Arrest those accuser, imprison them, etc… Additionally, we can see from the research that uneducated women and illiterates women are the main victims of sorcery related violence.
Therefore I think every girl in the highlands and across PNG must sent to school, and that is not just to avoid accusation of witchcraft or sorcery, but there are many reasons for that. To be better educate to stand up for their own rights.
