Mali 🇲🇱 have shut down the offices of Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold over alleged non-payment of taxes in a long-running dispute over mining revenues.

According to Malian officials, Barrick Gold owes approximately 305 billion CFA francs (around $500 million) in unpaid taxes, retroactive tax adjustments, and dividends from 2020 to 2022.

The government has also blocked Barrick's gold exports since early November 2024. When the military government took power, they revised mining code and enacted a new one in 2023, which grants the government a larger stake in mining operations and tighter control over resource exports.

Barrick Gold, one of the world’s leading gold producers, operates the Loulo-Gounkoto complex in Mali.

As I sat in the crowd this morning and watched with pride as one of my best friends' took the stage and spoke passionately about the work that she does as Executive Director of the Employers Federation at the Pacific Tripartite High Level Forum on Future of Work, Climate Change and Decent Work in celebration of the International Labor Organization's (ILO) Centennial Year, I was overcome with so many emotions. Recalling our days in High School in debate competitions and than meeting up at UPNG many years later, with our parents and families backing us all the way brought back so many memories. Florence, I know your parents are celebrating your achievements in heaven but I just wish they were here to witness how you can take on the world and speak with charm, passion and confidence about professional challenges, achievements and your vision for the future.
Life has its challenges and you Flonty have never been one to back down and allow situations to get the better of you.
I believe God has brought you this far for a purpose and he still has great plans for you.
So proud of you Florence Willie and proud of your family too. Their belief in you and support has contributed immensly to who you are today.
You are a born leader. Simple, humble and with a big heart. And of course, one of the most intelligent persons I know.
