A traditional Bel Kol (compensation and reconciliation) ceremony has been held at Mendi Police Station following three weeks of tribal fighting at Ipipia Village in Upper Mendi LLG, Southern Highlands Province.

The conflict was between the Surup and Marupa clans. During the fighting, Petersen Black, a member of the Yakop Tribe, was killed by members of the Marupa clan.

Following the death, the Marupa clan came forward to make a traditional Bel Kol payment to the Yakop Tribe and the family of the deceased as part of efforts to seek forgiveness, compensation and reconciliation.

As part of the ceremony, the Marupa clan presented 12 pigs, one cow and K20,000 in cash to the Yakop side.
The Bel Kol was formally accepted by Jack Mogopire, leader of the Yakop Tribe, on behalf of the deceased's family and tribe.

In accepting the traditional compensation, Mr Mogopire called on both the Marupa and Surup clans to resolve their differences peacefully and not involve the Yakop Tribe in their ongoing conflict.

“Now I am accepting the Bel Kol. I don't want you both to involve me in your fight. I call for peace in our communities.”

Mr Mogopire said the acceptance of the Bel Kol should be seen as a step towards peace and reconciliation, while urging the communities to prevent further loss of life, destruction of property and displacement of families.

Marupa clan leaders Gorden Andy, Eric Kepelo, Sedrick Semal also feel sorry over the loss of Late Peterson Black and Late Seremu Wapeya and send condolences to immediate families.

They said the conflict had affected the entire community, including elderly people, women, children and men, with families forced to flee their homes.

“We are very sorry that we have lost lives and property. Our village has been destroyed, and our old people, children, men and women have fled. But we need peace in our community. Let us stop this fight and bring peace for the sake of our people and communities.”

The reconciliation was witnessed by local leaders, Simon Tolpe, President of Karinz LLG; David Hep, Chairman of the Southern Highlands Peace and Good Order Committee; and Keven Sapul, President of Upper Mendi LLG and Mendi Police Force.

The Bel Kol ceremony is regarded as an important traditional step towards restoring relationships, rebuilding trust and preventing further violence.

However, there is yet to be a formal ceasefire agreement between the Surup and Marupa clans.

Community leaders have called on the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary and relevant law and order authorities to continue supporting the peace process and ensure that further fighting does not occur.

The Law and Order Chairman Southern Highlands Province urged the Surup and Marupa clans to respect the traditional settlement and work closely with police, local leaders and the Peace and Good Orderu Committee to establish a lasting ceasefire.

The reconciliation marks an important step towards healing following the death of Petersen Black, the destruction of property and the displacement of families during the three-week conflict.

A formal ceasefire and continued intervention by police, community leaders and peace authorities will be important to maintain peace and prevent further violence in the area.

The Mendi Rugby League (MRL) competition commences tomorrow. The official draw has been released for all teams and supporters to take note.

All teams must be at the field before their scheduled game.
Official kick-off: 12:00 midday

3rd & 4th Place Play-Off: Friday, 4th September
1st & 2nd Place Play-Off: Sunday, 6th September

All teams are kindly asked to strictly follow the official draw and scheduled times so the games can be completed early and smoothly.

Kam Stap Mangi Construction Limited has presented a new set of jerseys to the Sara Hawks Rugby League team ahead of their important match this coming weekend.

The jerseys were presented today at Tente, Mendi, by Lemon Lape, representing Managing Director Fiddles William Powi, to Sara Hawks, a team competing in the Mendi Rugby League competition.

Speaking on behalf of Mr Fiddles Powi, Lemon Lape said the company recognises sport as an important avenue for young people, helping promote discipline, teamwork and positive community engagement.

Sara Hawks Team President Lexan Ank expressed appreciation for the timely donation, saying the team had been in need of a new jersey set ahead of the weekend's match.

Mr Ank said the new jerseys had boosted the players' confidence as they prepare for the competition.

On behalf of the Sara Hawks players, management and supporters, Mr Ank thanked Managing Director Fiddles William Powi and Kam Stap Mangi Construction Limited for the assistance.
