Donโ€™t be afraid to make mistakes. You are capable of doing many great things, but donโ€™t expect everyone to give positive feedback. Some people may feel jealous because they cannot do what you are doing. The weak-minded often focus on your mistakes and speak negatively. Keep moving forward and donโ€™t look back.

A peacebuilding initiative planning and consultation meeting was successfully conducted at Muruk Lodge, bringing together community leaders from Nipa Basin and Lai Valley Rural LLGs to discuss strategies for promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development within their respective communities.

Speaking during the opening session, Dr. Emmanuel Kumpio Andrew, Deputy Provincial Administrator of the Southern Highlands Provincial Administration (SHPA), expressed his appreciation to Ms. Marylyn Tabagua and the Highlands Rural Women Development Foundation, as well as UNDP, for their partnership and support in advancing peacebuilding efforts across the province.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Andrew emphasized that peace remains the foundation of development and progress.
"Peace is the foundation of development and progress. That is what I want to see in Lai Valley and Nipa Basin Rural LLGs. Without peace, meaningful development cannot take place, and our people cannot fully benefit from government services and economic opportunities," he said.

Dr. Andrew challenged the community leaders present to take ownership of the peacebuilding process by becoming ambassadors of peace within their respective communities.

"The leaders gathered here today must become ambassadors of peace and champions of sustainable growth in our societies. Your leadership is critical in promoting dialogue, unity, and mutual respect among our people," he added.

He further noted that the Law and Justice Sector has experienced significant changes and progress since March 2025, with ongoing efforts focused on strengthening community-based peacebuilding mechanisms, enhancing stakeholder collaboration, and fostering an environment conducive to social and economic development.

The consultation provided an important platform for leaders to discuss community concerns, identify priorities, and develop a collective approach towards maintaining peace and addressing emerging challenges within Nipa Basin and Lai Valley.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Southern Highlands Provincial Administration, UNDP, and development partners to strengthen local peacebuilding structures and promote sustainable development through inclusive community participation and leadership.

GOVERNMENT ISSUES EL NINO WARNING AS JOSEPH CALLS FOR EARLY PREPARATION NATIONWIDE

By The Political Columnist
Friday, 20 March 2026 | Port Moresby

The Minister responsible for National Emergency, Hon. Dr. Billy Joseph, MP, has today issued a comprehensive national briefing on the developing El Nino weather event and its expected impacts across Papua New Guinea, warning that early preparation will be critical in protecting lives and communities.

The government, through the National Disaster Centre (NDC), is continuing to closely monitor the current El Nino alert issued by the National Weather Service, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and regional climate agencies.

According to Minister Joseph, the developing weather pattern poses a serious threat to food security, water supply, and vulnerable communities throughout the country, particularly in drought-prone and high-altitude regions.

โ€œAn El Nino event brings the threat of prolonged dry weather, frost in the Highlands, and severe pressure on food and water security for our people,โ€ Dr. Joseph stated.

The Minister confirmed that a full detailed assessment identifying high-risk provinces, projected timelines, and sector-specific impacts will be made public in the coming days to ensure citizens, provincial governments, and local communities are fully informed and prepared for the anticipated natural disaster.

DETAILS OF IMPACT ASSESSMENT TO BE RELEASED

Dr. Joseph said the forthcoming assessment will provide clearer guidance to provinces and districts expected to face the most severe conditions, allowing authorities and communities to begin mitigation and preparedness measures early.

โ€œThe full detailed assessment of high-risk provinces, expected timelines, and sector-specific impacts will be released to the public in the coming days to ensure every citizen, community, and province is aware of this imminent natural disaster and can prepare accordingly,โ€ he said.

The Minister emphasized that preparedness and awareness at the local level would be essential in reducing the humanitarian and economic impact of the drought conditions associated with El Nino.

GOVERNMENT TO LEAD RESPONSE EFFORTS

Dr. Joseph further assured the public that the national government will take the lead in coordinating response and relief operations, with support expected from bilateral partners, churches, non-government organizations, and the private sector.

He also stressed that all relief funding and emergency support programs would be administered transparently and in accordance with the Public Finances Management Act to ensure accountability throughout the response process.

The Minister called on leaders at every level of government to begin mobilizing awareness and preparedness efforts immediately.

โ€œI call on all leaders at every level, from LLG Presidents to Ward Members, to take this alert seriously. Early preparation saves lives and reduces cost. We must be proactive, not reactive,โ€ Dr. Joseph said.

NATIONAL DISASTER CENTRE TO PROVIDE REGULAR UPDATES

The National Disaster Centre is expected to continue issuing regular public updates as weather conditions develop and further assessments are completed.

Authorities are urging communities across the country to remain alert, conserve food and water resources where possible, and cooperate with local authorities as preparedness measures begin to roll out nationwide.
