Papua New Guinean Gershom Isaac travelled to Australia hoping to build a better future.

Instead, he told ABC's Four Corners he became trapped in a labour hire system where he worked up to 12 hours a day picking fruit and vegetables, sometimes earning less than A$7 an hour.

Gershom says he worked in temperatures reaching 40°C, climbed ladders and fruit trees all day, lived in overcrowded and poor-quality accommodation, and received no pay if he became sick or injured. He also alleges that labour hire contractors controlled where he lived, where he worked and how he was paid, leaving him feeling powerless.

His experience is not presented as an isolated case.

The investigation includes accounts from other migrant workers who also allege long hours, low wages, overcrowded housing, deductions for accommodation and transport, and little ability to speak out without risking their livelihoods.

The report raises serious questions about whether Australia's fresh fruit and vegetables are, in some cases, being harvested by vulnerable workers who are paying the real price for cheap food.

As Gershom put it:

"Every human being has to be treated with respect, with dignity. They are the ones that go out every morning to feed Australia."

If these allegations are true, then protecting workers should be just as important as protecting profits.
