We still cannot accept the loss of Rene Baterbonia.

Mindanao did not just lose a basketball player we lost a symbol of hope.

Rene represented every young athlete from the provinces who dared to dream beyond the limits of where they came from. Through hard work, humility, and dedication, he showed that talent from Mindanao belongs on the biggest stages.

Those who knew Rene knew him not only for his presence on the court but also for his character off it. He was humble, respectful, kind, and grounded despite his success. He carried himself in a way that made younger players look up to him, not just as an athlete, but as a person.

For countless kids playing on outdoor courts across Mindanao, Rene was proof that dreams are possible. He became an MVP, a leader, and an inspiration to many who saw themselves in his journey.

His future was bright. He had the talent, the work ethic, and the heart to make an impact at the highest levels of Philippine basketball. More importantly, he had the ability to inspire the next generation of athletes who hoped to follow in his footsteps.

Today, we mourn not only the loss of a promising basketball player but also the loss of a young man whose story touched so many lives.

As members of the Mindanao basketball community, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones. We continue to pray for strength and healing during this difficult time.

We also hope that, in due time, all relevant facts surrounding this tragedy are clearly communicated so that his family and the community may find understanding and peace.

Most of all, we choose to remember Rene for the life he lived, the hope he gave, and the example he set.

Rest easy, Rene Baterbonia. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations of Mindanao athletes. You will never be forgotten. 🕊️🏀
