August 10, 2014, when I received my very first salary as a kitchen-hand (dishwasher) dito sa Sydney, Australia. It was $315 AUD or around P12,600 at that time, for one week of washing dishes. International student ako and only working part-time. During that first week, sobrang weird ng emotions ko. I kept questioning myself: graduate ako ng La Salle, scholar pa, tapos madalas nasa Dean’s List, pero nandito ako naghuhugas ng pinggan. Alam ko, medyo may pride and ego yung dating kasi pinaghirapan ko talaga nung nasa college ako.

Ang inisip ko nalang, if I can’t survive this simple work na kahit sino kayang gawin, then I don’t deserve to be successful in life. Sabi din sakin nung boss ko sa kitchen na si Chef Francis, gawin ko lang stepping stone yung work ko dito, tapos hanap na ako nung linya ko talaga, which is Photography and Multimedia. Inisip ko rin yung salary—yung one week na kinita ko dito sa paghuhugas ng pinggan eh equivalent na ng one month salary sa Pinas back in 2014.

Fast forward to today, January 17, 2025. Meron na tayong sariling bahay dito sa Sydney. Meron na rin tayong mga businesses and investments that bring not only financial comfort but also fulfilment kasi passion ko talaga yung mga ito. Napagtapos ko na ang mga kapatid ko, and now they have good careers. I was able to help my parents retire early and build a retirement house for them in Manila. May mga businesses at real estate investments na rin tayo sa Pinas.

If you are an international student, OFW, new migrant, or kahit sino ka man, I want you to know that life will get better. Just focus on your goals. Don’t let pride and ego get in the way. Ignore the noise from people who don’t bring value to your life. Don’t compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter five. Most importantly, always remember: God’s plan is better than yours. Put your faith and trust in Him.
