𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦 | 𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗢 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗖𝗲𝗯𝘂 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀

INato: Photo Stories of Communities in Cebu opened its doors to the public last May 18, showcasing visual stories of Cebu's different communities at the Jose T. Joya Gallery Faculty Wing.

Communication juniors from the JOURN 135B - Photojournalism class presented four photo stories featuring the everyday communities of IT Park's Karinderyas, The Pasil Fish Market, Pasil's Tuslob Buwa and Puso culture, and the Broommakers of Labogon.

"The chosen subjects are "INato" in their community, but they are also economic drivers—not just in the village, but of the city and the province as well," Assistant Professor and JOURN 135 Instructor Annie Fe Perez-Gallardo stated in her speech for the exhibit's opening program.

Guests Sauhn Vincente, Francis Luis Torres, Kei Galon, and Joya Gallery Volunteers joined the exhibit opening, alongside Juan Carlo de Vela and Jacq Hernandez who guided the students as guest speakers during the semester.

Rooted from the bisaya word for "ours," INato reflects the students' commitment to telling stories that belong to Cebu's very own communities that are often overlooked.

INato is open to the public until Friday, May 22 at the UP Cebu CCAD Building.

Dinhi nagagikan ang panginahanglan sa daghang pamilya, ug dinhi usab makita ang paningkamot sa mga manininda nga nagtrabaho gikan sa kaadlawon hangtod sa gabii. Dili lang kini usa ka merkado, kundili usa ka buhing komunidad nga puno sa istorya sa paglaum, pagpaningkamot, ug kalig-on sa katawhan.

Sa karon nga panahon, samtang nagkadaghan ang plano sa pag-uswag ug pag-usab sa syudad, importante nga hinumduman nga ang Carbon dili lang yuta o estruktura nga mahimong iprivate o himuong negosyo sa pipila. Kini usa ka pampublikong luna nga nag-alagad sa katawhan, ug ang pagpanalipod niini nagpasabot sa pagpanalipod sa katungod sa komunidad nga makagamit ug makabenepisyo sa usa ka merkado nga para sa tanan.

Busa, sa pagpakita sa atong baruganan ug paghinumdom sa kahulugan sa Carbon, magtapok ta sa Bagsakan karong Mayo 22 sa mga kiosk sa University of the Philippines Cebu. Kini usa ka higayon sa paghiusa aron ipadayag nga ang Carbon kinahanglan magpabilin nga bukas, publiko, ug tinuod nga alang sa katawhan.

Born out of necessity, tuslob buwa has become an “exotic staple” that reflects the community’s culture, labor, and everyday life. But beyond the shared meals and tradition are stories of hardship and resilience carried by the families, workers, and residents behind every simmering pan.

This photo story explores how these realities remain in Suba–Pasil, where tuslob buwa continues to bubble on the same streets, fed by the same hands.
