“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Do we have what it takes to be a disciple of Jesus? How does the Bible describe an ideal disciple of Jesus? One very good way to find out is looking at the eight beatitudes that Jesus speaks in Matthew 5. A true disciple will experience the first aspect of a beatitude before he/she experiences its second aspect.

Let’s say verse 7. As a disciple of Christ, are you a merciful person? Is forgiveness something you can give unconditionally? Can you let go of a grudge that may build in your heart? Do you hate sleeping with anger inside of you? If your answer to these is questions is a resounding “yes” (1st aspect), then God will look at you as one who deserves His mercy and forgiveness (2nd aspect)—one who deserves to be called a disciple of Jesus.

And that’s just one. Why don’t we read the rest of the beatitudes (Matt 5:3-10) and ask ourselves, “Which of these beatitudes do I struggle to be?” Pray to God that He’ll give you an opportunity to work on a beatitude. Say if you want to be more merciful (v.7), don’t push away unforgiveable people because it’s God’s way of teaching you how to extend mercy and be forgiving.

So let’s the beatitudes every morning as if Jesus is telling us, “This is what I want you to be.”
