personal care brand providing scent options for gendered products

08/03/2021

was, is and will always be a social construct. A fiction, born in an oppressive patriarchal imagination, of how women and men are supposed to act, dress, feel, think. "Gender" changes over time and it changes from culture to culture. What is considered “feminine” in one culture, may not be so in another. What was considered “masculine” 100 years ago, may not be so now.

Today, reinforced by the capitalist system to increase its profits, by the corporate media such as Facebook or Twitter, as well as the medical establishment, "gender" is often conflated with “sex”, and is described as “innate” or “inherent".

Very few of our “decision-makers” - people in power - understand what gender actually is, the history of this term, and how - through the Anglo-Centric, colonial imposition - it became written into common vocabulary and legislation.

Partly because of this we are now in a situation of legal confusion, where our medical forms, job applications, and even legal instruments, routinely use “social construct” when they mean “your sex”.

No one is born with “gender”. Unless you are religious believer - which you are perfectly entitled to be - determining someone’s “gender” is as possible as determining someone’s “soul”.
