There are many different theories on whether honey attract ants. There are various articles and reports that have different stands on this. Some state that real honey does not attract ants, only fake “honey” that is actually sugary syrup attracts ants.

Ants generally are attracted to sweet foods, and different species of ants (in different places) are attracted to different types of honey (ie depending on the floral varieties) in varying degree. Hence whether ants would be attracted depends on various factors including place, ant species, honey varietal. All honey eventually will attract ants. Ants will eat anything that is nutritious and in its natural state be it with or without sugar.

Ants are attracted to moisture (food with moisture). Pure honey has less than 20% moisture. If ants try to eat the sticky pure honey, ants will be stuck. So, at first the ants will not be attracted by pure honey, but as honey tends to absorb moisture from the air, making the outer layer of the pure honey to be diluted, then ants will be attracted to the pure honey eventually.

So, different honey will start attracting ants at different stages and depending on how much moisture is in that authentic natural honey. Well, these creatures are cleverer than us and they will not touch anything that’s been laced with chemicals or anything artificial/synthetic.

In fact, many honey collectors had said ants love genuine honey! Honey is a food that ants do eat in the wild.

So the next time you hear of someone sharing a piece of supposed good advise that pure honey does not attract ants kindly correct them.
