🇵🇭 Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan! 🇵🇭
Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of our heroes who fought for the freedom we enjoy today. As we celebrate Philippine Independence Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on our rich history and the vibrant future we are building together.
Wishing everyone a meaningful and festive celebration with family and friends!
Did you know?
While we celebrate Independence Day on June 12, it wasn't always that way. From 1946 to 1961, the Philippines celebrated its Independence Day on July 4—the day the United States granted the country full independence in 1946.
In 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal issued a proclamation shifting the official holiday to June 12 to commemorate the day General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed independence from Spain in 1898 in Kawit, Cavite. July 4 was subsequently renamed "Philippine Republic Day."
The Flag's Symbolism: During the 1898 declaration, the Philippine flag was unfurled for the first time. The three stars represent the three main geographical divisions of the country: Luzon, Panay (Visayas), and Mindanao. The sun represents the eight provinces that first rose in revolt against Spanish colonial rule (Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Laguna, and Batangas).
The National Anthem: During the 1898 declaration, the Marcha Nacional Filipina (the precursor to our current national anthem, Lupang Hinirang) was played for the first time by the band of San Francisco de Malabon. It was an instrumental piece at the time; the lyrics were added later in 1899.
A Truly Global Independence: The 1898 declaration was unique because it was written in Spanish and was witnessed by a human-rights officer from the United States, Mr. L.M. Johnson, who signed the document as a witness.
