The three-week training on Renal Nutrition Management has greatly transformed my perspective and approach in caring for patients with renal disease. Over the years, I have been assessing patients and providing nutrition interventions, but this training has made a profound impact on me as a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian.

I have become more meticulous in evaluating patients’ dietary intake, monitoring their laboratory values, and considering potential drug–nutrient interactions. The course deepened my understanding of the pathophysiology of kidney diseases and emphasized the crucial role of individualized nutrition therapy in managing these conditions. It also enhanced my ability to develop evidence-based meal plans tailored to the specific needs and stages of renal disease.

Furthermore, I gained a greater appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration, working closely with physicians, nurses, and pharmacists to ensure holistic and coordinated patient care. This training has strengthened my confidence and competence in providing nutrition care for patients with renal disorders, ensuring that every recommendation I make supports improved clinical outcomes and enhances patients’ quality of life.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Caraga Regional Hospital and the Nutrition and Dietetics Department for this valuable opportunity, and to the National Kidney and Transplant Institute – Nutrition and Dietetics Division for generously sharing their expertise and knowledge with us.

One of Hong Kong's local delicacies is the "Egg Tart," or "Daan Taat." It is a flaky puff pastry filled with sweet egg custard, made from eggs (a good source of high quality protein), sugar (a source of carbohydrates), and evaporated or condensed milk (which provides carbohydrates, protein, and fat).

Locals enjoy it as a snack, breakfast item, or dessert.

✅ Nutrition Highlights

‼️High in sugar and saturated fat – contributes to taste but should be consumed in moderation.

❗️Contains protein and calcium – thanks to eggs and milk.

‼️High calorie density – small in size but energy-rich.

⚠️Reminder:

Be mindful of how much we eat, as egg tarts are rich in sugar and fat and consuming anything in excess can be harmful to our health.

Handling Stress the Healthy Way 🍏

With work demands and life’s responsibilities, stress is everywhere and stress eating has become a common coping habit.

But nutrition can help us manage it better 😅

- Stress can change our appetite, some overeat, others lose it.

-It also speeds up the loss of key nutrients like Vitamin C (immune boost), B vitamins (energy and nerve health), and Magnesium (muscle relaxation).

How to Achieve Optimum Health?

As a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian, we always emphasize the importance of adopting the MOVABA diet- MODERATION, VARIETY, and BALANCE. This dietary principle serves as the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

However, good nutrition is just one part of achieving optimum health. We also encourage individuals to engage in REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, which is essential for overall well-being.

As a healthcare advocate, I actively participate in sports, and last week I took part in one of the activities held during our Hospital Week. I was honored to win 2nd Runner-Up in one of the competitions (badminton).

This experience reminded me of the importance of practicing what we preach, not only promoting healthy living to others but also living it ourselves.

Achieving optimum health is a lifelong journey, and combining proper nutrition with regular physical activity is the key to leading a vibrant and balanced life.

As Clinical Nutritionist Dietitian ❤️

A referral was made today for a patient in the ICCU (NGT Feeding) presenting with severe energy-protein malnutrition.

As a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian, I assessed the patient’s most recent laboratory data to evaluate nutritional needs and formulate an appropriate intervention.

In collaboration with the attending physician and in line with the institution’s healthcare team, my dietary recommendations were presented and subsequently prescribed.

Many people misunderstand the role of a Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian (RND) in the healthcare setting.

Some individuals wrongly assume that dietitians are simply responsible for taking food orders or distributing meals, similar to a “carinderia vendor” who serves food to customers based on preference.

However, this is a misrepresentation of the profession 🤭

What are the role of Registered Nutritionist-Dietitian in a Hospital Setting?

Registered Nutritionist Dietitian:

*Conducts nutritional assessments to identify nutrition-related risks and diagnose malnutrition

*Creates and implements individualized nutrition care plans based on medical conditions and patient needs

*Monitors and evaluates patient progress, modifying interventions as necessary

*Educates patients and their watchers on proper nutrition that aligns with medical diagnoses and treatment goals

*Collaborates with the healthcare team, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals

*Manages the hospital food service operation to ensure meals are nutritionally adequate, safe, and therapeutic
