Two years after my 5-YEAR-OLD SON PASSED AWAY, I heard someone knocking on my door saying, "MOM, IT'S ME."

I still can't figure out how I got to the door.

It was a Thursday night. Late—one of those late nights where every little sound feels amplified. I was engaged in mindless kitchen tasks, attempting to escape that all-too-familiar hollow pain, when I heard it.

Three gentle knocks.

A pause.

Then a small, trembling voice I hadn’t heard in two years:

"Mom... it's me."

I became frozen.

My breath stalled. My skin felt icy. It couldn’t be. It absolutely SHOULD NOT be.

But that voice...

My son. My little boy. Taken away at five. The tiny casket. The nights I called his name into the darkness, hoping it might somehow summon him back. The sorrow that transformed me into a stranger within my own skin.

Another knock.

"Mom? Can you open?"

My hands began to tremble so fiercely I could hardly remain upright.

Grief has played tricks on me before. I've heard sounds of footsteps that weren't there. Laughter echoing from nowhere. I've turned around in stores, convinced I'd spotted him.

But this was something else entirely.

This voice was right outside my door. Tangible. Near.

I stumbled forward, clutching the counter, the wall—anything to keep myself from collapsing.

My fingers found the doorknob.

I twisted it.
