Bahadur Shah Zafar was the last Mughal emperor of India, ruling from 1837 to 1857. He was a poet and calligrapher and is remembered for his involvement in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny, which ultimately led to the end of the Mughal Empire and British colonial rule in India. After the rebellion's failure, Zafar was captured by the British, tried for treason, and exiled to Rangoon (present-day Yangon, Myanmar), where he died in 1862. He is often romanticized as a symbol of the struggle against British colonialism in India.
