DIY glycerin soap base

For 200 g of 100% coconut oil, the typical NaOH amount is based on coconut oil's saponification value.

Formula (200 g batch)
Coconut oil: 200 g
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH): 36.6 g (0% superfat)
For a small safety margin (about 5% superfat), use 34.8 g NaOH instead.
Distilled water (to dissolve NaOH): 73 g

Ingredients

Coconut oil: 200 g
Stearic acid: 30 g
NaOH: 34.8 g
Distilled water (lye solution): 73 g
Glycerin: 60 g
Sugar: 40 g
Water (to dissolve sugar): 20 g
Ethanol (95–99%): 60 g

Procedure

Wear gloves and eye protection.

Slowly add 34.8 g NaOH to 73 g distilled water (never the reverse).

Let it cool to about 40–45°C.

Melt the coconut oil and stearic acid together at 70–75°C.

Pour the cooled lye solution into the oils while stirring continuously until light trace.

Cook the soap paste gently until it becomes translucent.

Dissolve the sugar in 20 g water, then add it to the soap.

Add the glycerin and stir well.

Add the ethanol gradually while stirring. Cover the pot to reduce alcohol evaporation.

Continue heating gently until the soap becomes clear and transparent.

Pour into molds and allow to cool and harden for 24–48 hours before unmolding

Shelf Life

12–24 months when wrapped well and stored in a cool, dry place.

This glycerin soap base can be remelted and customized with:
Fragrance oils or essential oils
Cosmetic colorants
Herbal extracts
Dried botanicals
Clays
Skin-conditioning additives suitable for melt-and-pour soap

Note:

Making a clear glycerin soap base from scratch requires careful control of temperature and ingredient ratios. Always recalculate the sodium hydroxide amount with a trusted soap lye calculator whenever you change the oil recipe.
