Since ancient times, scurvy was a nutritional disease that affected sailors on their long sea voyages due to a serious deficiency of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid).
This deficiency occurred because they did not consume fruits and vegetables during their long journeys.

It was not until 1747 that James Lind, a doctor in the British army, discovered that oranges and lemons allowed to cure and prevent scurvy.
