How far should loyalty to “the boys” go?

Seven men. One woman.

A woman says she was gang-r*ped by seven men at Cornell University in the US. According to her lawsuit, others were encouraged to join through a group chat.

I keep thinking about what it means to read a message like that.

Where is the “What the hell are you doing?”
Where is the concern for her?

When does the fear of betraying a friend become stronger than the urge to protect another human being?

The criminal investigation initially ended without charges. Now it has been reopened. The lawsuit also alleges that some students were allowed to submit essays to lessen disciplinary consequences. Cornell says the sanctions also included suspensions and expulsions.

And at the centre of all this is her. Telling her story again. Continuing to pursue the case.

I have so much respect for that. I can only imagine the strength it takes.

But I also have respect for those who don’t feel able or safe enough to report.

Here in Sweden, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, just over 10% of reported r*pes lead to prosecution. Evidence is often difficult to obtain. In a survey about sexual offences, a common reason for not reporting was feeling that it would be pointless.

That hurts to read.

We need to teach our children that friendship also means speaking up. And make sure that anyone who reports sexual violence receives support.

Stopping a friend from hurting someone isn’t betrayal.

But who are we betraying when we choose to protect a friend instead of the person being harmed?
